  • Ready For A Rebound? Gilead's $1000 Pill [View article]
Isn' this the same "price" conversation we had with AIDS therapies 20 years ago. The fact about Sovaldi is that it eradicates Hep C - even more effective than AIDS therapies. Gilead has and will maintain their decade leadership in AIDS treatment. If there is a company that can handle this "Waxman" issue - it is Gilead.

  • Apple: This Is Ridiculous [View article]
TC's ultimate test will come when Apple launches a completely new product; iWatch, iTV, iPayment, etc. Updating the iPhone, iPad and expansion building growth in China is what Apple must do to survive. The jury is out.

Google on the other hand is proving itself over and over again. The market is in love with contact lens glucose monitoring, google glass, Nest, Youtube, etc. The market has already awarded credit to Google for just making bold moves.

The market used to price Apple like this. But we all know TC is not Steve Jobs. TC has to prove he can launch new and successful products. Why else would the market sell off when Apple beats on the top and bottom line?

  • 3 Major Catalysts For Apple In 2014 [View article]
Steve Jobs had the proven ability to deal with content providers (iTunes). My blood pressure rises when I ponder the fact that I'm paying north of $100 per month for Direct TV. I only watch 5-6 channels and NFL Football. I need an ala carte offering. The bundled cable offerings must go. Have you checked out some of the content many of these channels? Rome is burning while the music is playing!

  • 3 Major Catalysts For Apple In 2014 [View article]
As a long term shareholder of Apple I see 2014 as a make or break year for TC. Is there any doubt in your mind that Apple wouldn't have already disrupted the model of television id Steve Jobs were running the company? I can think of 5-6 major software/hardware products Apple can create and launch in 2014. If TC doesn't get this done and all I have to hope for is a large screen iPhone or a larger iPad - I will no longer be a long term Apple investor. Apple is held to standards no other company has to deal with. This is frustrating for investors as Amazon doesn't even have to post a profit to double in value.

  • With The Berry Petroleum/Linn Energy Merger Approved, LINE/LNCO Is A Buy [View article]
The Berry Petrolium/LINN merger is fundamentally important for improving Linn's core fundamental business. The Street is too hung up on the "short" assault via Barron's articles. Norman has it correct - long positions purchased this stock for dividend yield. I continue to add to my position and love the concept of the monthly dividend. Think about what Linn pays you each month versus bonds/CD's. Share price will come back over time.

  • Apple Is On Fire [View article]
All the clues are present for a CH deal. Increased production of 5S to 500,000 units per day, leaks of pre-order offers out of China, Carl Ichan trumpeting how undervalued Apple share price is ($450) and now a WSJ report. The best news for Apple shareholders is the change in psychology.

All focus is on hardware metrics. I'm not reading/hearing as much noise about Apple's software development and intrinsic value supporting higher margins. It has been a difficult year to be a long term Apple investor. Happy things are turning around!

  • Apple's Topsy Acquisition: Good Move? [View article]
Apple is software and hardware company vs Microsoft which for many years was just a software company. I'm pleased to see TC focus more on the software side of the business. I'd also encourage TC not to abandon the Power Mac users.

  • Gilead Sciences - After Another Amazing Year, It Is Time To Be Cautious [View article]
If you are a shareholder of Gilead - it would be a reasonable idea to take profits at the 12 month holding point (capital gains) and shift to holding call options. Gilead has demonstrated as a company it can successfully market in a "Hep C" type market/reimbursment environment. The wildcard is the potential dislocation of patients in an Obamacare healthmarket. Going long in call options would limit downside risk and risk of capital.

Gilead now has a market capitalization the size of Merck.

  • Boeing (BA +3.1%) is flying high today after a fire on another Dreamliner last week caused a bit of panic by investors, who feared another possible grounding was on the way. The stock has gained back much of its initial 7% plunge on the news, as flights of the airliner, at least for now, continue unabated. [View news story]
    Yes. Exactly. August 100 calls

  • Still Bullish On Apple - But For How Long? [View article]
I want to Tim Cook to use a Steve Jobs phrase, "We refuse to ship junk". But that means no more Apple Maps screw ups! Hope he learned from that hurtful experience.

  • Biogen (BIIB -1.2%) expects to delay the EU launch of its Tecfidera multiple sclerosis drug until H2, as the company wants to make the treatment's data protection clearer so that it can potentially receive longer patent protection. Biogen has already launched Tecfidera in the U.S.; the medicine is expected to receive EU clearance this quarter. [View news story]
Biogen management hasn't missed a beat this year. It will be interesting to see how Mr. Market responds to a bump in the road. All reports show Tecfidera is doing great in the US.

    Long Biogen call options!

  • Having reported its largest annual profit in five years earlier this month, Toyota (TM) has forecast that its FY 2014 net income will jump 42% to ¥1.37T ($13.4B). Meanwhile, the car maker intends to increase the total compensation paid to directors by 28% to ¥1.53B. [View news story]
Perhaps the increase in compensation is the beginnings of Abenomics working? Large Japanese multi nationals have had a tough time since the 2008 financial meltdown.

  • Apple (AAPL) releases Tim Cook's official statement (.pdf) to the Senate ahead of his Tuesday appearance at a hearing on corporate tax payments. Among other things, Apple claims it paid ~$6B in federal taxes in FY12 and a 30.5% effective federal tax rate, and that its foreign units don't engage in the practices the hearing focuses on (the shifting of IP to offshore havens, revolving loans from subsidiaries, etc). The company proposes a tax system that's "revenue neutral, eliminates all tax expenditures, lowers tax rates and implements a reasonable tax on foreign earnings." (previous[View news story]
This Apple tax hearing reminds of how Microsoft's party came to an end. This isn't about doing what's best for the American people - it's pure grandstanding. Don't forget - Congress is supposed to modify the tax code more often than every 30 years. Think the world has changed since 1987?

  • Linn Energy (LINE) -5.1% premarket after a weekend Barron's article warns of a sharp drop if the dividend gets cut. LINE's 7.5% dividend yield has supported the company's high unit price even as its fundamentals have faded; in Q1, LINE failed to produce enough cash to cover its distribution, even by its generous measure of distributable cash flow. LNCO -6.8% premarket. [View news story]
I remain as confident as ever that Linn Energy will generate enough free cash flow to support it's dividend. The last management conference call discussed raising the dividend once the Barry Petro deal is closed and moving to a monthly dividend. Linn also sold off an asset and booked a $400 mil profit in a little over 1 year. This is a well run company and Linn continues to raise dividends to shareholders over time. I was a buyer in the pre-market!
