Good reply. I grew up in the 60's and 70's when the common man viewed the stock market as a casino and there were no 401k's where they could even come in contact with the market. It was all CD's and savings accounts in my family.
What about CEO's pays skyrocketing - 200x the rate of their underlings rather than the 20x a few decades ago.
Why did the disparity shrink under Clinton with higher taxes on the rich and a booming stock market?

  • Initial Jobless Claims [View news story]
It was either 87 or 89, same time of year. Amid a nice crash going on, a nightly news anchor asked a commentator "how much further will the market fall?" Commentator: "Another two or three days like this and we'll be down to zero". Didn't knock the legs out from under the economy.

I'm employed. So are all the people around me right now. We are all full time, no one is flipping burgers. Everyone here makes well over the minimum wage. We must be an anomaly.

Or, you just held onto your stocks and rode the wave down and then back up, ending up wealthier in 2014 than 2007. If true unemployment hit 15%, 85% kept their jobs and 401k's, never wavering from placing their paycheck contributions.

    Worked for me.

Just a bit of a comparison, and I may be way off base. The Asian crisis in July of 1997 was quite devastating to the far east, some currencies tumbled close to 40%. Although the crisis brought stocks down initially, within a couple of months they were above July 1 levels again. A breakdown in commodity prices can be good for the American consumer (I remember paying $0.79 per gallon at one point for gas). Of course, American consumers, when given low prices, will go ahead and buy more.
