Thanks Ted for clarifying.

This positive news further strengthens the application of Provenge at the onset of the disease. It is terrible that the on-label use (and med insurance restrictions for payments) inhibits to some degree the administration of Provenge at an earlier stages of the disease.

I still believe that doctors employ the easier treatments with poisonous chemo therapy and radiation rather than engage in a cumbersome process...who suffers from this: the patients.

As usual, your article is well written and informative.
BP has secured U.S. government permission to ship U.S. crude oil to Canada, and Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) has applied for a U.S. export license, signs of how the boom in U.S. oil production from shale rock is reshaping its role in the global energy marketplace. Shell declines to say how much oil it planned to export or to which destinations.

You are right about the competition...the ever increasing number of competitors will certainly impact Netflix negatively. Let's see what spin Reed Hastings will present on Oct 23...any streaming increase should be questioned because more people take advantage of the free month and then bail. But he wanted to be a pig and greed is blinding.

Whitney Tilson lost millions on his short bet and then reversed his position to long and then lost more millions. So any comments from Tilson should be questioned...he wants out and wants to make money to cover his losses. Why would anyone believe Tilson. And as for Citigroup's biased comments...please...the fundamentals now and going forward do not support a high valuation.

Reed Hastings at the helm of Netflix has proven to be disastrous.

The following was reported in the NY Post - August 7, 2012:
"Chemo May Feed Cancer"
Cancer-fighting chemotherapy can cause damage to healthy cells, triggering them to secrete a protein that sustains tumor growth and resistance to further treatment, a new study in Nature Medicine says. Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle made the “completely unexpected” finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body while easy to kill in the lab. (http://nyp.st/MuLc38)

As a former immunologist, I concur with these findings and believe these findings only strengthen the application of Provenge. It is my opinion that doctors prefer an easy pill pushing therapy rather than an intensive therapy. Regrettably, patients are denied a therapy program that produces results and, if applied during the early stages, we would see survival rates beyond current expectations.

A friend of mine is now suffering from the effects of chemo and radiation with liver, stomach and colon damage and, after surgery to correct some damage, he still suffers digestive disorders and his quality of life greatly reduced. A large portion of his liver is irreparably damaged.

On the QT, studies are now being conducted to determine the effects of radiation and chemo on patients who are now succumbing to the effects of such treatments.

Sadly, Prostate cancer patients treated with chemo and radiation succumb to the effects of chemo and radiation without knowing that these treatments brought about collateral effects resulting in untimely death.

I still believe that Provenge provides the safest and effective treatment for long term survival...

Ted…I have been retired from immunological research for the past 20 years having made a career change from science to the financial sector…have yet to decide whether I made the right decision. In response to your query regarding my thoughts, you can appreciate the difficulties that we encounter whenever we introduce a foreign substance or chemical to target a disease that we have yet to get an understanding due to its organ specific origin and then to its metastatic invasive transformation. Although I do not have a scientific explanation since I am not familiar with the specific action of the drugs in question, the cancellation effect of these drugs is not surprising given the attack mechanism response of cancerous cells to any perceived structural similarities and I can readily appreciate the negative impact of such potent drugs [abiraterone (Zytiga) and docetaxel (Taxotere)] used in conjunction or applied following the other. These drugs do affect other cellular organs in the body as well…especially filtering organs. And then there is the aspect that not every human is similar…not everyone reacts to drug treatment in a similar fashion…hence, different survival horizons. My comments are based purely on an educational basis.

My goodness, I listen to pharmacological drug commercials on TV and ask myself who would want to take these drugs…the side effects are worse than the illness…some side effects can even cause death. But it is noted that not everyone will experience the same side effects…that such side effects are being reported by different users with different genetic characteristics. What is the FDA thinking when the FDA approves these medications with death being a potential side effect?

With regard to Provenge, similar to a vaccine in nature with its antibody production effect, many efficacious vaccines are based on the isolation of a specific bacterial/cellular antigens and the introduction of these antigens to the human body for the production of antibodies. Provenge should be applied earlier with the onset of diagnosis while the immune system is viable and not compromised. Sadly, the years necessary to conduct trials and the financial costs pose restrictive time constraints when so many are succumbing to Prostate Cancer. And any off-label use is not generally covered by medical insurance.

As an DNDN investor, I am disheartened by any misleading statements presented by analysts who fail to note critical factors in the development of Provenge and the costs associated with its manufacture. I will always remember the analyst who appeared on TV prior to Provenge FDA approval and said that DNDN would skyrocket to $60 on the approval...the analyst failed to inform the audience that there were reimbursement and insurance issues as well as manufacturing expenditures that have yet to be resolved at that time...then when these issues came to the forefront and ultimately resolved, many investors got burnt.

The tragedy is that Provenge treatment, especially if given during the early stages of prostate cancer detection, is the safest and best treatment possible.
Morgan Stanley (MS -2.6%) has offered a price adjustment to Facebook (FB +2.5%) investors in the event they overpaid due to order execution problems, Dow Jones reports. The news comes as lawsuits fly, politicians huff and puff, and sources tell the WSJ MS and other underwriters have made a $100M profit through "greenshoe" short positions on Facebook shares (Felix Salmon recently explained the arrangement in detail).

Driving home its commitment to financing original programming at the expense of library size, Netflix (NFLX -5.6%) has created a new position of VP of Original Content. Filling the position is content acquisition VP Cindy Holland, whose current job will be assumed by Latin America/Canada content acquisition chief Jason Ropell. The shakeup comes on a day when Netflix made new lows for 2012.

Analysts at Facebook's (FB) lead underwriters cut their revenue estimates ahead of the IPO, reports Reuters, passing the information on to a few of their key clients. "My biggest hedge fund client told me they lowered their numbers right around mid-roadshow," says an IPO researcher. He still bought the issue, he says, but flipped it immediately and went short. Shares -3.8% premarket.

Just two days after JPMorgan (JPM) announced a massive $2B trading loss, Pimco's Bill Gross comes to its defense, calling it one of the “best-run banks in the world." It’s a decently capitalized bank, Gross says, with $120B of Tier-1 capital. "That’s 10.5%, which is higher than the 9% U.S. average.” And capital quality, according to Pimco, is what you need to trust most in a situation like this.

Dendreon (DNDN) posted a narrower Q1 loss, but shares -11.9% premarket as sales of its Provenge prostate cancer vaccine rose 6.5% Y/Y, with low single-digit growth predicted for Q2. Analysts are concerned over the level of sales growth and that profit margins for DNDN’s only approved product aren’t high enough. A Citi analyst says the "only upside" in the stock comes from potential acquisition.

Netflix (NFLX -7.6%) closed at levels last seen in early January after Viacom (VIA, VIAB) stated on its FQ2 earnings call Epix's movies will be available on Netflix "under any circumstance," but other streaming partners might also be added. Last week, it was reported Apple (AAPL) is talking to Epix, which Viacom co-owns with LGF and MGM, about a streaming deal. Netflix's exclusivity ends in September.

The Chesapeake (CHK -13%) Q1 call has ended, and aside from McClendon's opening remarks - "a great deal of misinformation" has been published, he's "deeply sorry for all the distractions" - analysts (screened?) focused on CHK's asset monetization and debt reduction plans. CHK continues to emphasize its move from gas to oil, and says it's on track to meet debt reduction targets.
