Why Royal Dutch Shell Is Likely To Bid For InterOil Imminently [View article]
having worked the upstream for shell for many years I can assure you they are thorough in making a sound technical /economic decision. They take the time that is necessary. But I will give you a big hint, when the big hand is at 12 and the little hand is at 8 months ...the interest is DEAD.
The Portland-Montreal Pipeline is the latest battleground in a protracted campaign by anti-oil sands’ groups to choke off Canadian access to U.S. markets. The operator of the little-known pipeline linking Montreal and Maine is studying how to make the line the first route to get Canadian oil sands crude to an Atlantic deepwater port, but the plan relies on supplies that may not be available for years. True and very unfortunate. Even the official opposition NDP party in Canada now opposes any and all pipeline options to move Alberta oilsands product. The enviro-greenies have become eco-terrorists to oilsands development.
Natural Gas Shale Drilling - Much Ado About Nothing Or Profits Abound? [View article]
There is fracking and then there is FRACKING ! Todays frac technology and results bear absolutely no similarities to pre-2000 technology.
I think what you mean by "lateral drilling" is directional drilling of horizontal (or sub-horizontal) wells. This drilling technology was made possible by major improvements in bottom-hole drill string assemblies ( advancement mud motors, bent subs, MWD gamma, etc.) This allowed for the geosteering and placement of well bores in geologically specific portions of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Initially, these wells were open-hole stimulated which did not allow for the extensive rock formation fracturing and multi-fracking we see today.
It was the development by a Canadian company (Packers Plus) of pre-perfed wellbore liners placed within the horizontal wellbores immediately after drill completion that really kicked off the ability to extensively fracture the hydrocarbon reservoirs in a number of select locations. Packers could be set to isolate the selected locations and pump pressures could be increased sufficiently to create extensive fractures in the otherwise tight reservoir rocks.

Ray...actually, shell is a very big player in unconventional gas in NA, including the Eagleford, marcellus, Duvernay, and Montney Formations to name some.

Ray...like you I am also long RDS.A, and have been for 11 years. In that time I have seen & heard shell management promise to turn the good ship to a more profitable course. Voser's promises are no different than his predecessors. There was even a time when shell borrowed to pay dividends.
How To Play The Short Squeeze And When To Cash Out [View article]
Blackberry has had a gigantic short interest for a while now. Tons of false information is being spewed out by "analysts", and publications such as wsj, in an attempt to help the shorts drive the share price down.
The DOD has approved the use of BB10 phones and tablets on its networks, BlackBerry (BBRY) announces. The statement comes a couple days after the WSJ reported the DOD will sign off on the use of iPhones and iPads, as well as Samsung Galaxy phones. In March, Electronista reported an order is on tap for 650K iOS devices that will replace 470K BlackBerrys; the DOD denied the part about dumping BlackBerry, but didn't confirm or deny the part about the iOS orders. I have been waiting for the recent news announcements to lift the BB share price. Today was not the day. Any thoughts that the high short interest is weighing the stock down?
The Coal Industry Is Getting Crushed [View article]
Good article. Coal use for electrical generation will continue to decline further, before eventually making a come-back in perhaps 20 years. So, if you're in for the long haul, hang in there.
good article. I may have missed it in your discussion, but the big dark cloud hanging over Su at the moment is the potential large tax hit that Canada Revenue Agency might assess to Suncor.
The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to shut down a lawsuit filed by Nigerians against Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) over claims the company was complicit in crimes committed by Nigeria's government is a major victory for corporations that have been sued in the U.S. for their alleged role in foreign atrocities. The ruling could affect other cases, such as those against Rio Tinto (RIO) and XOM over activities in foreign countries. [View news story]
Its about bloody time the they made this decision. That said, I'm sure the Nigerians will get their pound of flesh off Shell somehow.
Did Suncor Just Sell Its Conventional Natural Gas Assets At The Worst Possible Time? [View article]
I worked as a production geologist on a number of the conventional, sour gas reservoirs that Suncor just divested. Some were inherited when Sunncor bought PetroCan. Sour, dry gas is not overly attractive, and I think Suncor made a good move in selling these assets.

Value Digger...any thoughts on when ATH might be worth picking up? They are getting more involved in the Duvernay & Montney plays which could help the share price.

Shell (RDS.A) "is in much better shape than it was when he started," seems to be the general reaction to Peter Voser's retirement news. But not everyone is enamored with Voser's work, as Shell plans a $120B-$130B capex program for 2012-15, including $33B this year. Perhaps the most interesting part of the news is that Shell will consider external replacement candidates. [View news story]
