Judge Posner's Dangerous Thinking on Links and the Future of News [View article]
I agree with everything you say, except one point I found odd. You state: "The Times has three editors for every writer but in the blog, there was no need – no opening – for them." Now, I don't know the details of The Times' blog in this specific instance, but it certainly doesn't seem generally true that internet citizen journalism wouldn't benefit from editing. It strikes me that in the age of grassroots citizen journalism the future of "professional" journalism has to do with editing, contextualizing and aggregating internet sources. Global Voices is a website that does this very well. The observation that news "may no longer be a market-sustaining product, but one, like the arts, health and education, needing foundation support" seems absolutely right. I suspect this may even be a move for the benefit of journalism. Journalism, just like the arts, education and health care, is a basic public need necessary for our society to function. There are some great interviews with top journalist's about the future of journalism at www.ourblook.com/compo... which I have found very useful.
