  • Barrick Gold Is Destroying Shareholder Value [View article]
T46 v agree with you, I bought 2015 LEAPS @ 25 2 months ago, up 30%. This is an ideal way to play ABX, if gold goes up I can easily double my money, and limit losses.

  • What It Really Costs To Mine Gold: The First Quarter Barrick Gold Edition [View article]
Regarding cost of production. As the price of gold goes up so does the price of production. If a miner has a rich vein of gold and can produce gold at $500/oz and gold is at $900 the profit margin is $400/oz. If gold goes to $1400, production costs will go up as the miner will start to produce gold from poorer veins, that were unprofitable at $900. Thus if gold is at $1400, production costs may go up to $900, and the miner still makes a profit of $500/oz. This poor vein will not be in production at $900, in fact it is worth $0 to the miner, as gold goes up in value, it becomes gold.
Why not mine the$500/oz vein. You get your profits from the poor reserves when you can, the rich vein will always be there.

So as the value of gold goes up, so does the price of production, for smart miners. Why deplete your gold, when you can profit from reserves that were valueless, and may be valueless in the future.

Born again, my kind of bet, if I am wrong I lose a small amount of money, but if right, could be a ten bagger, already up ten percent. But not really excited, will wait, in fact if ABX goes down any more I plan to add to position.

    cheers and good luck

Stefan, a perfect storm for ABX, what else could go wrong? I am afraid to ask, I may find out. Having said that I initiated an out of the money call position for 2015, at a very good price. Sort of a stop loss, but I like the odds.

    Thanks for update

  • Should You Avoid Buying Barrick Gold? [View article]
Ed, good article. I am long GG, no position in Abx. However I am considering opening a long position by buying a 2015 out of the money LEAP. This is a very cheap way to play Abx. I believe Abx has hit the perfect storm, gold driven down, major mine write off. What other major catastrophe can hit? And even if it does, my loses are minimal, but upside potential is great. I believe I will take this bet . Abx about $18

I would appreciate criticism and comments.
