AMD Warning: A Sign Of PC Industry Consolidation? [View article]
On GPU front, only money to be made long term is workstation cards and gpgpu functions. AMD's marketshare on this front is next to nothing.
On x86 CPU front, only money to be made longterm is servers and CPU's that run professional software. AMD's marketshare on this front is next to nothing.
On APU laptop front, ARM tablets are destroying what company banked their future on, fusion chips, which have have become irrelevant with rise of tablets.
When it comes to intel though, even without laptop sales, they still will make billions everytime they release newer, better server chip. The next gen 22nm 12core Ivy-E will sell like hotcakes because it will be vastly superior to anything else out there. Even IBMs high end CPUs are garbage compared to Intel's, and everyone knows it.
this is new apus like sandy/ivy and llano trinity,
Low end gpus will all but disappear leaving the mid range and high end market, were there is little profit to be made.
Only profit to be made in gpu's is business cards like firepro and quaddro series, Nvidia dominates this area, with AMD way behind in market share, and performance
On x86 cpu front, server cpus are still a huge area of profit, unfortunatly, Intel dominates this area, and again AMD is way behind in market share and performance.
To top it off, Intel and Nvidia both has large cash reserves, AMD has no cash, and is in debt.
Sorry, but you would have to be a fool to buy AMD stock right now. Until they release a new product thats acutally beats the competition, they have no chance to make profit. They cant just get offer value products anymore. Its not going to work. They need MONEY. You dont make money by selling 99 cent McDoubles.
