  • CEO of Altairnano Shown the Door [View article]
The outcome of the Navy grant-sponsored work will be a good indication of the viability of the technology. If it is as good as claimed (and I hope it is) Altair should have been in discussions with people like Corning (for ceramics,low-cost mass production, top-notch research and development capabilities) a long time ago, to find the best ways to keep quality up and production costs low. I think there has been too much "pride of authorship" on the battery development, and they need someone with the vision to break out of the "build it in my own garage" syndrome (has been the downfall of a lot of great concepts) and take it to a process-oriented company with R&D and manufacturing expertise. It was definitely time to make a big change - overdue, really. Let's hope there is someone in charge who can see beyond Altair's own back yard.

The article you recommend is hyping FCL in typical rhetoric. Note the production data cited in 2005 show somehwer around 44 million tons, but the shipped tons that year are cited in pounds, showing an inventory build in 2005 of around 10 million tons with no explanation. And no accounting for the production of the "other twelve exciting mines". Now, FCL may be a fine company, and a super investment, but when I read that kind of sales pitch I get very suspicious and stop reading. But thanks for the info anyway.

Well said, Malkiel. Crisp and clear. Don't know hay there has been so little recognition of this phenomenon. I wonder if we are beginning to see a similar result with gasoline prices at the pump? So many people seemed to be totally ignoring the increased prices, and just "putting it on the plastic"... which will soon come home to roost, as part of the over-extension of credit to card holders. Maybe this will be what triggers the real crunch time...
