What is the future of long rang aircrafts?
Truce in Qantas, Virgin Australia dogfight a false dawn?
Analysts call it a truce. Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said today at the Macquarie Australia Conference that the domestic capacity growth rate in FY2014 second-half will slow to around 3.5% while international capacity growth is slowing to 4%-5%. Its Brisbane-based arch-rival, Virgin Australia, has been trimming capacity since the beginning of FY14. It cut 2.4% of available seats in March to 1.85 million from 1.9 million a year ago while trimming capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), by 1.8% year-over-year to 2.16 billion, thereby pushing load factors up by 2.6 percentage points to 76.5%.

The new 777-X wing composite plant in Everett has just broking ground
Boeing produced line is out dated, the 747 was design in 1966, 737 in 1966 base on the 707 of 1958, 757 and 767 in 1972, 777-200 in 1989, 737NG in 1997, 787 in 2003 building aircraft from is great for military aircraft but is a slow and expense for commercial aircrafts.
Today aircraft need to build from newer aluminum, materials-technology using NC machines and snap together technology like the car company with automations to keep the cost down and production rate high!

Boeing won military contact over ten years by paying off Darleen Druyun a former United States Air Force civilian official (Principal Deputy Undersecretary of the Air Force for Acquisition) (who had moved to Boeing in January) was begun. Reporter Joseph Galloway wrote that some documents found in congressional investigation indicated the A330-based tanker met more of the USAF specifications than the Boeing tanker and had a lower proposed cost.[7][8] Druyun pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in jail for "negotiating a job with Boeing at the same time she was involved in contracts with the company".[9] Additional fallout included the termination of CFO Michael M. Sears, who was sentenced to four months in prison in 2005, and the resignation of Boeing CEO Philip M. Condit.[10] The Air Force's KC-767A contract was officially canceled by the DoD in January 2006.[11]

Boeing Everett told its Good-OH-Boy, The FBI: Family, Friends and Brother-In-Laws, the Want-to-bee and the Lazy Bee, Bottle Head Yes Men to retire or transfer South Caroline.

McNerney has retiring or slacking Boeing top engineering for some time!
After Boeing bought Vought it has to replace the Vought computer operation system, the simple answer was to used existing system that Everett was using , but the Good-OH -Boy Starts their own Empire and reinvented their own systems , as at the same time the IE where not controlling the working package to the shop floor, the worker where not working the work package in orders causing, request for correction action and no one was managing the work package in sequential orders alone with all the late engineering changes the cause a loss of configure control
After Boeing discovery the under design wing it kept building aircrafts with under design wing in lieu of" stopping the line and fixing all the problems which would be a lot cheaper, but over 40 aircrafts had to be park and rework causing Boeing to pay the airlines late fee .
All the problems with 787-8 that been in the world press, where assembly and delivery in Everett

Vought build sought Caroline build section 47 and 48 and it partners Global Aeronautica of Italy mate together all the center section except for the section 41, without any customer configuration or interior for shipment to Everett
As Everett production fall further behind, South Caroline was ask to perform more of Everett work package.

South Caroline was design without stockroom and for a small workforce
Later Boeing needs a 2nd assembly line and Boeing issues a RFP and 88 cities responded and Vought won the contact.

The Boeing Engineering Change Board issue a mountains of late engineering after contact where sing, parts build and installed, Vought charge Boeing full price to remove and replace the parts, South Caroline has no back shop for any reworks

Boeing slows the pace on 777X - The Seattle Times
    seattletimes.com/html/... Seattle Times

The 777-X is only need on non-stop flying over water in and out of Singapore and Australia since all other world airport can be reach by existing aircrafts.

From Delta CEO: You cannot make a 777 consistently profitable flying only East, Coast to Europe. That would be routes 1,000 or 2,000 naut. mi. shorter than what it was designed for.”
Delta currently has 16 Boeing 747-400s in the fleet, the oldest of which have been delivered in 1989 (to what was then Northwest). The airline is looking at replacing them before the next D-checks are due towards the end of this decade.
Delta also wants to start the replacement cycle for its 58 767-300ERs, although for this type deliveries span over a longer period from 1990 to 2001. Combining the 747 replacement and a large part of the 767-300ER fleet leads to a requirement of an estimated 50 widebodies.
The carrier plans to look at four options: The Airbus A350-900 and -1000, all three models of the Boeing 787, the current versions of the A330 and a re-engined A330.

Delta is not looking at the 777X. “We don’t want experimental airplanes,” says Anderson. “We are not interested in it.”

The Boeing 777-X files get updated
These are everyday considerations for flights to say Los Angeles lasting just over 13 hours, but incredibly demanding at this stage of airliner technologies for a flight that will be airborne for an extra 7-8 hours, and needs to climb high enough when it is still ultra heavy to run its engines with acceptable efficiency, as it is no good being confined to say 25,000 feet for hours before the jet loses enough mass to rise to 35,000 feet and eventually 41,000 feet or slightly higher.

KC-46 Tanker program is on track!
In December 2003, the Pentagon announced the project was to be frozen while an investigation of allegations of corruption by one if its former procurement staffers, Darleen Druyun (who had moved to Boeing in January) was begun. Reporter Joseph Galloway wrote that some documents found in congressional investigation indicated the A330-based tanker met more of the USAF specifications than the Boeing tanker and had a lower proposed cost. Druyun pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in jail for "negotiating a job with Boeing at the same time she was involved in contracts with the company". Additional fallout included the termination of CFO Michael M. Sears, who was sentenced to four months in prison in 2005, and the resignation of Boeing CEO Philip M. Condit. The Air Force's KC-767A contract was officially canceled by the DoD in January 2006.

The kc-46 is more cargo then tanker and will take two kc-46 to do the jobs of one KC-10A or Kc-45 and Boeing must prove itself on the first 18 aircrafts.

Dennis Muilenberg is going to be the next CEO at Boeing. He has great vision and knows where he wants to take Boeing over the next 100 years!
Readly Dennis Muilenberg is 49 years old and Boeing mandatory retirement age is 65 years old
    65- 49= 16 years! not 100 years

Most significant, perhaps, is the thin bench there is to succeed McNerney. Shortly after he became CEO, McNerney said one thing that was his priority personally and professionally was to create a good succession plan. Who is there from within to possibly succeed McNerney in a year or 18 months? The answer is, at this point, nobody.
Ray Conner is well regarded, but he probably needs a couple of more years than a McNerney retirement timeline suggests. Pat Shanahan hasn’t any commercial sales experience. Dennis Muilenburg has no BCA experience.
McNerney may well have to get a waiver because so far he has utterly failed to have a succession path
Boeing’s Jim McNerney may seek a waiver to the mandatory retirement age of 65–he’s 64 this year–to continue as chairman and CEO.

  • The Slow Death Of 4 Engine Airliners Will Play Into Boeing's Hands [View article]
Serious work on SST designs started in the mid-1950s, when the first generation of supersonic fighter aircraft were entering service. In Britain and France, government-subsidized SST programs quickly settled on the delta wing.

Boeing was not the companies that offering a SST program
Northrop was building the pro type for Boeing

Boeing had two version of the SST one with the North American aviation B-1A swing wing design

    Douglas has there SST design
North American aviation was using the B-70 design with TWA marking
Convair SST was base on the B-58

The SST was seen as particularly offensive due to its sonic boom and the potential for its engine exhaust to damage the ozone layer. Both problems impacted the thinking of lawmakers, and eventually Congress dropped funding for the US SST program in 1971, and all overland commercial supersonic flight was banned

    the SST live on

The Rockwell X-30 was an advanced technology demonstrator project for the National Aero-Space Plane (NASP), part of a United States project to create a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) spacecraft and passenger spaceliner. It was cancelled in the early 1990s, before a prototype was completed, although much development work in advanced materials and aerospace design was completed. While a goal of a future NASP was a passenger liner capable of two hour "trips" from Washington to Tokyo, the X-30 was planned for a crew of two and oriented towards testing.

McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell International, and General Dynamics competed to develop technology for a hypersonic air-breathing SSTO vehicle. Rocketdyne and Pratt & Whitney competed to develop engines.

In 1990, the companies joined under the direction of Rockwell International to develop the craft to deal with the technical and budgetary obstacles. Development on the X-30, as it was then designated, continued until 1993, when it was terminated amid budget cuts and technical concerns

The Slow Death of 4 Engine Airliners Will Play Into Boeing's Hands
    How ?
Only Boeing is getting out of the four engine aircraft business!
The 747 was not the only Jumbo jet, L1011, Dc-10, MD-11, Airbus and Russia aircraft ect
Boeing is not the only aircraft builders in the world with 4 engines aircraft over the years , Convair 880, 990, Douglas Dc-8, Lockheed, and other American aircraft companies, The De Havilland DH 106 Comet, Russia airctaft ect.
The Dc-10 (MD-10 glass cockpit) and MD-11 are still in cargo service today
The DC-10 was offer in several subtypes -10 (short version,) -15, -30, -40, ( longest version) passengers, cargo, freighter, convertible cargo/passenger transport all at the same time for domestic and over sea markets with common nose, center and tail section
Unlike Boeing where only one sub-type is offer and build at one time (most of the time)
    Boeing production line is out dated: The 747 was design in 1961, 737 1966 base on the 707 of 1958, 757 and 767 in 1972, 777-200 in 1989, 737NG in 1997, 737Max in 2005, 787-8 in 2003, 787-9 in flight test, 787-10 TBD , 777-X 2013

Boeing will not offer an updated 757 the 757MAX

Boeing has yet to build the Yellowstone aircraft
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... Wikipedia

Airbus will offer the A38O NEO and A330NEO

What does Boeing need with 747-8, 767-200,-300,-400, 777-200,-300, -8X, -9X , 787-8, -9, -10 all in the same over sea market and only the 737 in the domestic market

Boeing has just rebuild 100 MD-11 freighter

Since 2005 Boeing has take 120 orders for 747-8 and 68 deliveries to date

The 747-8 only has 35% commonalty with the 747-400
The high price of jet fuel and the high cost of 747-8 will kill off the 747-8

The Air freight business has dry up too

Congress will end the Export-Import Bank that make Loan guarantees to sell Boeing jets
Many airlines are not replacing there exist Boeing aircraft, since Boeing CEO James McNerney, and GE CEO Jeff" Immelt are member of the board on the Import-Export Bank, that made better loan to foreign airlines at a lower interest rate

Boeing did build the 694 747-400 that has come out of passengers service
Airbus in 1998 offer the 380 with 324 orders and 132 deliveries

The 777-8x and -9X will replace the existing 777-200, -300 and freighter
The 777-X with 259 orders, with 9,000 ranges is only need on non-stop route flying over water in and out of Singapore and Australia since all other world airport can be reach by existing aircraft's
Its still cheaper to land and refuel aircraft in Taipei Taiwan then buying a fleet of long range aircraft's
Look at the price of airline stock vs the price of new aircraft's

Airbus only sold 36 A340-500, The A340-500 was introduced as the world's longest-range commercial airliner. It first flew on 11 February 2002, and was certified on 3 December 2002 with early deliveries to Emirates, allowing the carrier to launch nonstop service from Dubai to New York
Emirates airline has a mix fleet of both Airbus and Boeing aircraft's
    and 91 A380 on orders

The A350 was started in 2005 with 812 orders 70 cancellation from one airline and 118 orders for the freighter that is production, in flight test, that has flown at the Airshow in 2013 and 2014 and will be delivery in 2016

Cancellation or cut back of the orders or delay or deferrals of an orders by the airlines is nothing new to the aircraft Business, just to the press !

The 787 was started in 2003 with 1032 orders, 114 cancellation and 147 delivery to date,

Japanese industrial participation was very important to the 787 project, with Japanese companies co-designing and building 35% of the aircraft. This was the first time outside firms were given a key role in the design of Boeing airliner wings.

    Cost per ASM (CASM)
CASM is a commonly used measure of unit cost in the airline industry. CASM is expressed in cents to operate each seat mile offered, and is determined by dividing operating costs by ASMs. This number is frequently used to allow a cost comparison between different airlines or for the same airline across different time periods (say for one year vs the preceding year). A lower CASM means that it is easier for the airline to make a profit, as they have to charge less to break even. A low CASM, however, is by no means a guarantee of profitability. Further, CASM should only be compared across airlines with care. For instance, all other things being equal, an airline with a longer average stage length will have a lower CASM, because fixed costs will account for a lower portion of its total costs. For this reason, to be meaningful, CASM comparisons across different airlines generally require, at a minimum, that CASMs for all airlines be adjusted to a common stage length, or that the CASMs be graphed versus the stage length of all the airlines being compared.
