Agree, Couldn't be his fault as he did NOTHING to tame health care costs. However, if you are a Texan he did play a major role in the state being ranked 48th worst out of 50 via tort reform on steroids.

In my attempt to line up several medical procedures for Jan 2014 under what will be my new exchange insurance I encountered numerous pre-op personnel at Dr specialist & facility providing inaccurate information. Both individuals said "we won't be taking exchange based insurance", period & you should stay with your current insurance policy. Which, strangely, I received a letter from insurance co indicating I could do so but no preventative procedures with no deductible. In other words, Dr & facility get paid more under my pre-exchange insurance plan via my contribution.

Called my insurance provider to verify, guess what, both Dr & facility are in fact in the PPO. Point being, some folks can't check their politics or beliefs when they walk through the health care door. Don't let them scare you, verify with insurance provider. Although I am covered, tomorrow I will find another specialist to perform a basic procedure as I will not allow their primary interest be anything but ME as they will get paid.

There is a tremendous amount of inaccurate info out there and on this site. If you have individual policy you must verify.

@Buck.... Since 09-2010 health care policies must adhere to most ACA new laws, e.g., pre-existing, no deductibles for preventative procedures, 80% must go to payouts or refunds, yearly $2m maximum payment (unlimited beginning Jan 1, 2014), etc. corp plans rollover each year so therefore insurance companies were required to provide the above at the latest 9-2011. Individual policies obtained prior to 9-2010 were not grandfathered in (like mine).

This means that corp policies have had to provide those benefits for over 2 years and such a dramatic increase next year in corp plan makes no sense unless the corp itself has made a decision to require more participation from employees. This is a benefit provided by corps and in a tighter employment market you will see better competition between corp policies. Or, perhaps, you may see corps, overtime, eliminate health benefits. One or the two has occurred or will occur. One could say ACA has provided corps the opportunity to rid itself of some or all benefits.

Bottom line, although some people may have liked it better the old way, the old way is drowning us in debt as health care cost is almost 18% of GDP!! Had we addressed the health care issue in the 1990's, I firmly believe we would not have as large of a debt issue. Debt or responsibility is the question. Eventually, single payer might be the way to go like most of the rest of the world has already figured out. We have a problem & both sides need to work together (laugh) to resolve. Could have had a great plan but the party of no is, well, no we won't, IMO.

Some of these high numbers for insurance are very questionable and if a fact, a better deal awaits you through the exchanges. My family (2) will save >$300 per month for "Gold" plan, more if Silver. No subsidy, higher deductible but will save an extra $ 1,500 per year as now preventative care has no deductible. Granted I require 2 procedures a year that are considered preventable procedures.

Only way my family pays more over this year's individual policy prices is if both my wife & I require surgery within the same year. Highly unlikely but a possibility.

@sog.... Agree on the pin touch issue as if it were more sensitive I would be spending too much time hitting the back button when I inadvertently skim my finger over ads within a site.

However, author's employment status is irrelevant as he has provided info that I was unaware of. Thanks for article, James.

  • Memo To Apple: A Map To Pandora's Jugular [View article]
I haven't used Pandora since iTunes Radio became available and I really like iTunes better. I am no music aficionado but I have not had a single issue with the selection algorithm. In fact, just prior to IOS 7, I got annoyed at Pandora's "are you still listening", time limits, and just quit playing issues that I will not go back.

Your comment about difficulty in finding iTunes Radio is confusing as it is at the bottom right of both my iPhone and iPad. I saw it the second after upgrading to iOS7. When I select the "app" it immediately goes to where I was when last turned off. I am 100% satisfied with iTunes Radio & so are several friends.

Maybe more folks will comment on their experience as the article is confusing to me.

  • Weighing The Week Ahead: Do Sidelined Investors Face Upside Risk? [View article]
Recently, there have been increased energy price fixing investigations by U.S. regulators. The heat has been turned up, so manipulators are, for the moment, behaving.

Also, gasoline prices have fallen during the holiday months since 2004. Start rising typically in January and continue through summer. Last year gasoline went up 15 cents on December 26 where I live.

I'm still bullish FB at the moment. The 16-18% pop just after announcement of 60% increase of rev & beat on net, prior to early teen statement, makes me optimistic that it can move to mid to upper $ 50's this year. However, didn't like the lack of movement Friday.

If it gets below 50 day, may shave a bit. Any thoughts on the 50 day?
