  • Bought General Electric In Roth IRA At $23.86 [View article]
Great article South. I agree on GE. However, was on SYF IPO in August 2014 & up >30% now &, IMO, it is still undervalued (11 p/e, no divi). Thus far, been a gem. Long GE & SYF.

    Thanks for sharing your article.

    Sammie,

Whether or not you want to post on WSB again doesn't matter. However, I would encourage you to read WSB each day even though you may think it is a waste of time (based on the same subjects discussed weekly from the same folks).

I have found that one can measure "sentiment" here on WSB & when sentiment is bordering on panic, then do the exact opposite of what most are doing. For example, in July last year I bailed on oil/gas plays & went 30% cash waiting for a re-entry in other sectors.

In September, Ebola scare hit. By mid-October posters here were going nuts saying stuff like "seal the borders, no immigration from Africa, etc". The tone was in full panic mode Oct 14-15. Those 2 days I put the 30% cash to work in airlines & medical insurance companies. Today, all are up at least 25% & more for airlines. So by reading daily & measuring attitude allows me to better time my investments by doing the opposite even while slogging through the same ole same ole posts.

Good luck & thanks to others for assisting in helping me have a very good 2014.

    Thanks again Fear.

GE had a decent & improved earnings report. GE requires a lot of patience as a long term hold. I do believe we will be rewarded.

GE spinoff of SYF (private label credit cards) continues to outperform from its Aug 2014 IPO (up 36%) which has helped me offset GE decline in 2014. SYF reported Friday as well and was up 7% or so for the day. I still think SYF is undervalued @ about a 10-11 P/E. Difficult for me to say what the P/E should be but if they were valued at the same level as Visa or MasterCard (which I don't think will happen) there would be a lot more to run.

GE owns 85% of SYF & plans to divest late in 2015. Not sure if buyback of GE shares or dividend will be provided to GE shareholders.

Excellent SPY vs Treasury dividend chart. Makes it interesting.

  • Wall Street Breakfast: Euro Drops To Fresh 11-Year Low [View article]
I would suggest that before selling GE, understand that they own 85% of SYF (Synchrony - largest private label credit card company) from their spin-off from GE. IPO'd in August 2014 & is up 36% from that date. SYF earnings were reported today & is up 6% or so for the day.

GE shareholders will benefit either from a 1 time dividend or retirement of some outstanding shares. It has been reported that the event will occur late this year.

    Long GE & SYF.

An inherited IRA is only taxed at distribution only.

If a 40 y/o person inherited a $10,000 IRA, he/she could elect 1) full distribution which would cause an increase of $10,000 for annual earnings or 2) take only portion of the "required distribution" which is life expectancy, let's say 80 y/o, less the age of the inheritor, 40, which is 10,000/40 = $250 annual distribution. There is not a 10% penalty for not being 59.5 y/o for inherited IRA. Also, no subsequent dividends or cap gains within IRA are taxed.
