  • April 11th - What A Difference A Week Makes.. Earnings Ahead ! [View instapost]
Fear, always look forward to your outlook. Very much appreciate you spending time & sharing your technical view as that is an area of weakness for me. I've learned to respect technicals but fundamentals seem to drive me most.

Good to see a bit more optimism. Me too. Funny how things change sooo quickly.

Like your HWAY pick as last 2 qtrs they are showing good EPS growth. Put on my watchlist. Another reason for interest in HWAY is as a pre 65 retiree, my wife & I are on an ACA policy & have been since start of 2014. To my surprise, about 18 months ago I started receiving calls from a "case manager" encouraging me to take advantage of preventive procedures/visits that are of no additional cost over the monthly premium (which is high but not the point). Both my wife & I fully embraced these procedures/visits. It is quite clear to me that medical health care is becoming much more efficient by really focusing on preventive practices that is a win win for the consumer & the health care companies (insurers, coordinators, facilities, physicians, etc etc). This is by no means a political stance but exactly how I see, myself, the change in the industry. It appears HWAY is part of the process that, IMO, will be standard going forward. Thanks for the pick.

Like your trucking pick. Sector has had good momentum. Own a small position in CGI. Wished it was a larger position when I bought it but I usually start small & add. Have not added since initial buy.

Due to optimism created by Monday's turnaround, I started another starter position (less than 1%) in XON. I also added to my position in BRK/B as it has under performed YTD. It is a top 5 position that has done well for me & certainly a long term hold.

Also, with the good movement in GE, it went from 5 to 3 position in my portfolio. Good to hear you are bullish on GE going forward. Me too!

This week the real earnings reports begin. I want to put more money to work as I am a bit more in cash than I like (about 19%). Plans are to wait until Tuesday morning before doing anything. Tues before bell we get JNJ, WFC, JPM. At this point & until proven otherwise, I tend to side on the position that strong dollar hits will be smoothed over even though, initially, that may not be the case. I think by 2-3 weeks from now, corps that have good numbers but got bruised by the $ will be fine assuming the economic data points during that period are good.

Under weight in individual bank stocks but nice position in XLF. Fines for individual banks bum me out but think they will be less (they have to be). Watching closely.

I am reading everything I can find on the millennial generation. What they are thinking, buying habits, etc. this generation (1982-2002 or so) is now larger than the baby boomers that are alive now & obviously will move the market beginning now & for as long as I am alive. My youngest son is an old millennial (1982) & I am very tuned into his young family of 4. Perhaps next week I will spend more time outlining this generation. I do recommend readers to take heed. What I will say today is they ARE NOT dumb & lazy as some portray.

Thanks Fear & let's all have a great week, month & year! I'm optimistic.

  • Why I May Finally Buy GE Again After Its Major Spin-Off [View article]
Remember they still own 85% of SYF (Synchrony) which is up 30+% since spinng off from GE in Aug 2014. Great spinoff that will add more $'s for buy back later this year. SYF, owned since IPO and it's still undervalued IMO.

    Long GE & SYF.

  • Raymond James downgrades Apple; Watch ship times slip to May/June [View news story]
Although I disagree with Raymong James, the stock price has it mostly built in already @ a 16 p/e. AAPL will outperform the S&P in the next 12 months. IMO.

  • Wall Street Breakfast: Shell Agrees To Buy BG Group For $69.6B [View article]
Kevin.... Guess I don't understand your question but I wouldn't spend any tax savings. I would invest savings.

If you are referring to additional school taxation, that is not an issue with me. I don't mind paying my share for children's education even though both sons have long ago graduated college.

The issue is taxes based on accessed value is an "influential tax". Meaning, certain entities, people, organizations, etc can & certainly do influence value estimate thereby not paying their fair share & increasing taxes for non-influencers. Considering schools in Texas are funding almost entirely through property taxes, abuses in valuation is not uncommon.

My property has increased 39% in value (using accessed tax value) since I built it 17 years ago. My property taxes have increased 186% in the same time period. That's the problem.

Discussion started about high property tax states and as Deer's link illustrates Texas is # 5. Just because Texas has no state income tax does NOT make it a low tax state for MOST citizens living in an area that has quality schools.

Since 2009 until current, the state of Texas has cut school funding in the billions. Just wondering why my property taxes continue to go up. Property value? Yep, maybe some. Redistribution of wealth? If so, who could it be?

If you answered, " Corporations", you are mostly correct.

    More balance is needed.

If one wants a fully functional & long lasting capitalism environment, you cannot pick winners & losers when it comes to education.

Young people must have opportunities to improve their situation. Some will not take the initiative but some will.

I think most of the issues in areas of unrest around the world are a result of young people not having the opportunity to improve their life which opens them up to manipulation.

Education is a societal responsibility if it is to survive & improve in the future.

    Rich.... Agree.

To equalize education, IMO, we need to somehow create competition among students in the neighborhoods of under served areas. Education dollars are more easily allocated to areas that meet or exceed scholastic standards & areas that don't, politicians are reluctant to allocate more. It is a perpetual downward spiral for some areas.

The big question is obviously how do you create competition in areas that are underserved. You could ask 100 individuals & get, most likely, 100 different answers. It's imperative that each & every area must have students that are viewed as leaders scholastically to show others in their neighborhood that they could become one as well. There is absolutely too much talented wasted in under served areas.

If interested, Google "Townview High School Dallas". This was an experimental educational program initially that attempted to resolve the above. It is a Talented & Gifted school that was offered to those in under served areas. It has been an outstanding success. Look at awards on website & you will see how successful it has been & is today.

Several years ago I watched a news report on the school & was convinced that most all students interviewed would not have been "motivated" to accomplish what they did w/o the opportunity.

Now, IMO, Dallas needs to take it down to early year educational opportunities. I want to believe there are a lot of children that once they see one of their peers succeed, they too want the same.

It is a very difficult thing to resolve but the current system is not working for some. Of course, parental guidance is paramount but we cannot turn our backs away from children that have uninvolved parents nor should those that are outperforming be penalized.

Didnt catch UCONN championship but did watch the semi against Maryland (I think) & I have never seen a lady's team run the court like the Huskies. Unbelieveably super fast.

Without looking, my guess would be New Jersey.

In parts of Texas, in highly rated school districts, I would guess top 5 highest.

    Interesting question.

  • The March jobs report: a wake-up call about the surging greenback [View news story]
The participation stat does not concern me as much as middle of the pack, in terms of age, baby boomers are now in their 60's. Healthcare insurance is now available to non full timers that provides financial certainty whereas it wasn't several years ago. Although costly, based on individual income, financial ruin has been mostly taken off the table providing part timers an option to not be full timers.

IMO, the participation rate will continue to slowly decline for several years. Pay attention to millennials & other generations for hints of where to invest. Baby boomer habits are important but less so than previously.

Bet NFLX was a life saver for those in the Northeast this winter. Folks under estimate the enticement of having the ability to watch what you want when you want for as long as you want. I enjoy watching stuff that I have already watched in years past. Great entertainment.
