  • Apple Could Take a Lesson from Google in Accommodating Developers [View article]
"Even though I had some mad iPhone envy, my good experiences with Droid are slowly doing away with that envy."

Tell the truth Sam. No fibbing.

You would have gotten an iPhone years ago if Verizon had it.

  • Apple to Buy Lala? [View article]
This might be a continuation of the Adobe-Apple Flash war. Apple may be buying Lala so they can replace Adobe's proprietary Flash with stds based HTML5.

  • Can Apple Stop the Android? [View article]
"To my eyes, this is looking like a repeat of the Macintosh-PC Wars of the 1990s which Apple lost."

Internet Meme - The term Internet meme is a phrase used to describe a catchphrase or concept that spreads quickly from person to person via the Internet, much like an esoteric inside joke.

This meme has legs; seen it at least 20 times in the past year. Interestingly, besides 'legs', it has no relationship to where the iPhone and Android are actually going.

Android will help kill Win Mobile. The Palm WebOS is dead unless deep pockets buy it; RIMM's BB and Nokia's Maemo will weaken.

Android and iPhone will survive the brutal wars, but only iPhone will dominate where it counts most - market share and net earnings.

Apple's dominance will be clearly apparent by Jan 2012.

  • Research In Motion: Still the Best Positioned Smartphones Play [View article]
Here's the business argument for iPhone.

Highly competitive creative businesses are using it in very innovative ways. How long will it take for testimonials like these to open the doors to large enterprise environments?

    www.apple.com/iphone/b...

And also, "iPhone has raised expectation levels for all smartphones..."

One thing I've noticed about friends who are skeptical about the iPhone's reputation: They assume that new competing smartphones are better than the REAL thing and buy something else because it's not an iPhone!

Some of these friends are now regretfully waiting their contracts out to get an iPhone.

Sorry, seems to me the iPhone and Android will be competing with each other while taking major market share from Windows Mobile and Symbian, and, to a lesser extent, from RIMM.

  • Apples to Apples: Will History Repeat Itself as Android Gains on the iPhone?  [View article]
What about Apple's PA Risc team's surprise? They're tweaking the recently announced ARM Cortex A9 dual processor.

How long will it take the 'rest of us (them!)' to match half the performance (power and battery life) in that monster?

  • Blackberry’s 26 Advantages over iPhone [View article]
Your pdf linked in item 26 (security - Lopez) is obsolete.

Published in May 09, it has no info on the current iPhone OS 3.0.

I'd be interested in a fresh release of this document.

  • Google Drops a Nuclear Bomb on Microsoft. And It's Made of Chrome. [View article]
If Chrome OS successfully enters the competitive field, it will help defeat the weakening Windows monopoly. It could gather most Linux development into one major dual CPU source. Very disruptive, no?

Result: MS loses billions in netbook and related licensing finally moving towards the oblivion of the dodo.

Don't get too excited. It will take a decade and MS might come up with a clever back to the wall response.

I wonder if MS has a black flag secret project to develop a brand new Unix based variant and introduce it as a Chrome/Mac/iPhone OS competitor. (That would make computer OS's interesting!)

  • 10 Reasons Not to Buy Apple [View article]
    Hao,

You've a huge misunderstanding of iPhone profits. Reread the WSJ article you cite. Apple's gross profits per iPhone (telecom subsidy included)are estimated to be $400+ (not your $27).

"On a per phone basis, Wu estimated that Apple gets about $600 a phone..." from your WSJ source.

PS - You also messed, up big, time in points 1, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10, but I won't get into those.

PPS - Turning lemons to lemonade, consider going long aapl (as I am).

  • The Ongoing Smartphone Revolution [View article]
Apple buying Sony is a bad idea. The 35,000 employees at Apple would be outnumbered by the 100,000 ??? at Sony. This would threaten Apple's unique and incredible culture for focused excellence in all areas of business.

Apple's culture is the goose that laid the golden eggsssssss and you don't want to mess with what they have.

  • The Downside to iPhone Success [View article]
If the virus comes through the App store, Apple will provide address info to the Feds. The Feds will arrest and jail. Not a very enticing target for the casual hacker.

If the hack is aginst the App store, itself ('pro' hacker), Apple will force an immediate defensive download across all devices. Mac OS X and the App Store is not an easy target. And again, the Feds will have a great opportunity to arrest the hacker.

One of Apple's objectives w/ the App Store system is to prevent hacker heaven from appearing on the OS X platform. As implemented the system appears to be thoughtfully designed and has a chance of achieving its security and reliability objective.

  • How Microsoft Could Kill Google on the Web [View article]
Sorry. Can't see how this half baked idea comes close to working.

Free means msft becomes a new socialist regime: Who will run the ad acceptance dept? The free mkt (Google) is perfectly matched to the job of choosing the ads that run.

Google has patented a great ad auction system. They have millions of servers to speed search queries to the universe. And, FWIW, Google appears to be an ingenious engineering company w/ attention to public opinion. People don't have a problem bringing their business to Google ("Don't be evil." works!).

Msft is a convicted monopolist with a long folk history of thuggery and malodorous conduct. There are many in the population who have a problem with helping msft succeed (C'est moi, for instance.).

So, if msft is going to compete here, I say they just need to get back to their labs and build a better mouse trap (and that, my friend, is something they haven't done in many years (See the msft 5 year charts.)).

  • Google Knol: Not Setting the World On Fire [View article]
    Roger,

Didn't notice till just now, that I am "Where's your Editor" forever!

OK - Pls change me to "pk de Cville" !

    Now for my comment:

I think you've overlooked the power of the Google site. I bet it will include a "knol" button. Many users will click knol and in many cases, that will suffice AND visits to wikiland will decrease a bit.

Google doesn't need to own wikiland, just pick some low cost low hanging fruit, and use the fig leaf of 'user convenience' to defend against the "don't be evil" chorus which will erupt when we all realize that Google is cleverly and powerfully trumping the search algorithm with that oh so convenient knol button!

  • Cowen Advises: Place Your Mobile Internet Bets On Google, Not Apple [View article]
I second Jon T and Tommo_UK and add this.

Arnie needs to take into account the extraordinary nature of the iPhone. Although he and the media haven't recognized it yet, the iPhone is a full Mac OS X computer in your hand. The incredible quality and experience of the iPhone and iPod will lead to an explosive virtuous cycle of appl product adoption.

1 - Today's iPhone user experience will not be approached, let alone matched, for several years. Remind you of the iPod? Apple will have a 50%+ share of the high end phone mkt, making 150 million iPhones in 5 years very reachable.

2 - Apple's control over pricing will support a thriving used iPhone mkt. When iPhone 2 comes out, many 1st buyers will upgrade and easily sell their originals on eBay. This will support a surging demand for iPhone 2 (3, 4, ...) on launch days. What's not to like about explosive adoption rates at each launch? Can you spell SIZZLE?

3 - Since it is a hand computer, people at the low end, like my friend Steve, will buy it because it's portable and they will be able to eliminate the $60/mo cost of wired dsl/phone to the home. Why? They'll visit friends, Paneras, or roam to get free access to the internet and all the Web 2.0, Ajax services, VOIP phone AND email, Facebook etc... My friend would like a Full computer, but it's way too expensive for him when you include the wired connection costs. In fact, since he's going through bankruptcy, he (and all value customers) will get their prepaid plan and use the phone minutes judiciously.

4 - At the business end, with a future of 100 million + iPhones (Mac OS X) developers will line up and pay aapl for certification to run on the iPhone. aapl controls all that plays natively, just like MS, and Sony control their game machines. Apple will use this control to maintain RELIABILITY and SECURITY on the phone. The iPhone will be known as KING in security and reliability. Do you think enterprises and gov'ts might value that?

5 - (See 4 above). As large orgs STANDARDIZE on the iPhone, they will finally open the door to Mac OS X adoption in the desktop, laptop, and server spaces.

There's probably more to be said, but I hope you get the picture. Jobs and company have introduced so many huge gamechangers (Apple II, Mac, iPod, TOY STORY). This is another one and the rest of the industry will be flailing at their taillights from now on.

PS - Oh, and what do you think the iPhone means to the Google partnership? (Hint: It's already resulted in YouTube being upformatted from the current proprietary Flash to the swifter and cleaner H.264 standard.)

Regards, from a very happy aapl long!
