Apple vs. Microsoft: Who Will Bring the Ideal Mobile Productivity Device? [View article]
"Granted, there’s no news on an input system, and if it is through a on-screen keyboard, this device will be severely handicapped from a productivity standpoint."
Aw, come on.
It will have an optional Blue Tooth keyboard, the only question being, "Will it be from Apple or 3rd parties?"

Apple TV ==>
Packaged as a large iMac (30"+ w/ front facing video) becomes a video cam for families, friends, and business. People will connect with each other in chairs, couches, desks, and tables through bandwidth sparing iFrame, the new little brother std to HD Video just shipped by Apple.
iFrame uses 1/4 the bandwidth of 1080 HD video.
Bring on the globally transformative expansion of video communications across TVs, iPhones, Macs, PCs AND, of course, Apple's new expression dominantly creative innovation.
"MSFT has their hands in consumer electronics as a whole."
In terms of making $$$$, the picture is very different:
- XBox - not profitable - Current Annual Profit is in, but they still have billions to pay back in R&D costs.
- Zune and ZuneHD - money loser, still
- Plays for Sure - no comment
- MSFT Retail - I wonder how this will turn out. (NOT)
- Msft support of HD Video - huh?
- Msft's Zune branded cell phone - coming in 2011! (Wait for it.)
Msft owns the enterprise (Heard of Stockholm Syndrome?). They have millions of micro surfs in IT and media doing their bidding because these guys earn their living by sucking at the msft cash machine teet.
Google Drops a Nuclear Bomb on Microsoft. And It's Made of Chrome. [View article]
If Chrome OS successfully enters the competitive field, it will help defeat the weakening Windows monopoly. It could gather most Linux development into one major dual CPU source. Very disruptive, no?
Result: MS loses billions in netbook and related licensing finally moving towards the oblivion of the dodo.
Don't get too excited. It will take a decade and MS might come up with a clever back to the wall response.
I wonder if MS has a black flag secret project to develop a brand new Unix based variant and introduce it as a Chrome/Mac/iPhone OS competitor. (That would make computer OS's interesting!)
Apple buying Sony is a bad idea. The 35,000 employees at Apple would be outnumbered by the 100,000 ??? at Sony. This would threaten Apple's unique and incredible culture for focused excellence in all areas of business.
Apple's culture is the goose that laid the golden eggsssssss and you don't want to mess with what they have.
Can Apple Remain the Unique Innovator It Was, Without Steve Jobs? [View article]
"So why is it Apple, Apple Only, and Again and Again Apple Only?"
1 - Jobs has created a unique culture of 'Spartan' innovation. I say Spartan because of his oft-quoted remark about Apple's innovation is great because of the 95% of the great ideas and projects they DON'T do! All the genius energy has been corralled and placed behind a very few arrowheads. (Genius is hard to direct, just like a herd of cats.) Don't worry. Jobs has taught the lesson and they will continue with Spartan innovation even without Jobs.
2 - Jobs has also created a unique culture of "Army of One" innovation. They all get strict secrecy as a huge corporate advantage. They all get integrated innovative development: design, marketing, sw, hw, factory production, business plans et al all get worked out in an integrated responsible fashion. They all know the NEW THING takes precedence over mgt politics.
3 - Jobs has nurtured the open source rooted Mac OS beginning as the NextOS in the mid 80s. The quality, breadth and efficiency of the code base is an incredible advantage over all competitors. Windows is collapsing under the bloat of its huge unwieldy Vista blob. Apple's OS is leaping ahead of every OS in execution, functionality, ease of use, and ability to continue innovating. They marry the OS to the Things, Marketing Plans, Business Models to create an unstoppable juggernaut for market dominance.
4 - Finally Apple lives for the future like no other 800 pound gorilla has before. Apple embodies great brilliance, discipline, speed, sizzle, and the will to create the future of personal tech THINGS.
I don't know of any other large cap company that acts so much like a startup as Apple.
The Strategic Reason Behind Microsoft's Retail Push: Windows 7 [View article]
Just My Opninion But,
I think MSFT will rein in its HW menagerie.
It will go to each PC manufacturer and qualify a LIMITED set of hw configurations. Dell might have 30 qualified hw configs. Same with HP, smaller manufacturers will have 15 and under.
I don't think they'll try to brand their own 'Zune' PC, but they're motivated to simplify the mess of a config problem they have. They might produce std target configs with full doc for manufacturers to copy closely.
(BTW, I don't think this will be successful either. Msft is so NOT the place to work for brilliant sw/hw minds; Msft leadership will continue dragging their warships over the sands of oblivion until they are a mortally weakened force in the PC business.)
If the virus comes through the App store, Apple will provide address info to the Feds. The Feds will arrest and jail. Not a very enticing target for the casual hacker.
If the hack is aginst the App store, itself ('pro' hacker), Apple will force an immediate defensive download across all devices. Mac OS X and the App Store is not an easy target. And again, the Feds will have a great opportunity to arrest the hacker.
One of Apple's objectives w/ the App Store system is to prevent hacker heaven from appearing on the OS X platform. As implemented the system appears to be thoughtfully designed and has a chance of achieving its security and reliability objective.
How Microsoft Could Kill Google on the Web [View article]
Sorry. Can't see how this half baked idea comes close to working.
Free means msft becomes a new socialist regime: Who will run the ad acceptance dept? The free mkt (Google) is perfectly matched to the job of choosing the ads that run.
Google has patented a great ad auction system. They have millions of servers to speed search queries to the universe. And, FWIW, Google appears to be an ingenious engineering company w/ attention to public opinion. People don't have a problem bringing their business to Google ("Don't be evil." works!).
Msft is a convicted monopolist with a long folk history of thuggery and malodorous conduct. There are many in the population who have a problem with helping msft succeed (C'est moi, for instance.).
So, if msft is going to compete here, I say they just need to get back to their labs and build a better mouse trap (and that, my friend, is something they haven't done in many years (See the msft 5 year charts.)).
