  • S&P futures jump to session highs, +0.6% following jobless claims declining to their lowest level since early 2008. The 4-week moving average declines 11.5K to 364K. Has anyone checked Jack Welch's twitter feed yet? [View news story]
A couple of better jobs numbers, just coincidentally, right before an election would be suspect no matter the party in the white house. These numbers are commonly revised a month later and usually do not sound as good post revision.
We have had 3.75 years of this admin. Not getting it done by spending ever more to accomplish virtually nothing. Only accomplishing the certainty of greater debt for future generations to have to fix.

  • After receiving personal assurances from the White House that the Pentagon will not cut contracts in January, Lockheed Martin (LMT +0.3%) says it won't issue layoff notices to employees before the election, as it had threatened to do. The decision ends a stand-off with the administration over deep automatic cuts set to hit defense spending if Congress can't find a budget solution, and the layoff notices were set to go out to hundreds of thousands of LMT employees in Virginia - a key electoral state. [View news story]
this administration's "personal assurances" are right at the top of the list with "the check is in the mail" and the timeless " I promise not to ............"

  • Google backs its pet project of seeing self-driving cars become a reality in a tweet from Google Auto that highlights that 60M Americans now live in states where cars theoretically could operate free of their owners. Though automakers such as GM, BMW (BAMXY.PK), and Audi (VLKAY.PK) have been researching the topic on their own, it's a tech company that's the clear leader in pushing the concept forward. [View news story]
One simple point, the car's computers must not run windows for an operating system. Reboots, lock-ups, etc not acceptable at highways speeds. A good reason not to own a ford with their sync system (windows based).

  • French PM Jean-Marc Ayrault says Greece should receive more time to meet the conditions of its €174B bailout as long as the country "is sincere in its commitment to reform." Ayrault's comments are the most explicit yet from France about leniency for Greece, although the the viewpoint faces strong opposition in Germany. [View news story]
If the French feel it is such a good idea, great, as long as they alone fund the extra cost.

  • Frustrated by banks' unwillingness to lend to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB), the U.K. government plans to create a bank that will facilitate such loans as part of an attempt to revive the economy. The state will provide £1B and try to attract £1B of private capital, and then borrow another £8B. However, the new bank won't lend directly to SMBs, but will instead fund financial institutions that do. [View news story]

  • Tacking on $2 since the Fed's QE announcement, WTI crude is back in triple digits and hopes from 10 weeks ago of gasoline below $3 gallon give way to worries of the price popping through $4. What Fed stimulus gives on one hand, it takes away with another (good luck getting them to admit it!). USO +1.6% premarket. [View news story]

  • Bernanke: "We're looking for something that brings unemployment down in a sustained way." Asked about further tools if QE3 doesn't work, he doesn't go beyond what's already been used: Communications, Treasury purchases, MBS purchases. [View news story]
This is funny, if it were not so sad. He wants to bring unemployment down in a sustained way. How about not playing with interest rates allowing the large number of seniors to earn something on interest income to buy things to stimulate the economy. demand side. ever hear of it?

  • Hurricane Isaac and the Venezuelan refinery explosion increase the chances of a release from the U.S. strategic oil reserves, analysts say, possibly by early next week. Without a release, gasoline prices may approach $4/gallon and open up Pres. Obama to criticism from consumers, but the reserve "was never intended as a buffer against high gasoline prices,” a former Shell exec says. [View news story]
