  • Discover slips post-earnings [View news story]
Good quarter. I imagine the CEO was not overly optimistic on the conference call despite all their early success in 2014 to keep the stock price down for buybacks. They will beat 2014 annual guidance by a healthy margin.

  • Starz Entertainment: A Potential Acquisition Target [View article]
You identified their biggest risk, and i think that risk is likely to come true.

I bought Starz at $26 in February and was able to sell in April north of $33 (which i was very happy about).

I spent quite a bit of time researching the company as well as watching all of their original programming, I actually really liked Black Sails. But, i do not think Albrecht deserves any credit for the success at HBO. Keep in mind most of the shows he supported did poorly and then only did well after the fact. The Power show and Lebron show have a chance to woo some of the young urban community, but i do not think they will ever swing with the HBO, Showtime and now Netflix crew.

I would say Starz is doing the right thing by investing in original content, but i do think there is a big chance of failure. Additionally, their movie distribution contracts will likely be lost or become less profitable down the road as the way media is delivered changes.

I am neither bullish nor bearish.

  • ModernGraham Quarterly Valuation Of Viacom Inc. - March 2014 [View article]
Really like Viacom at this levels. What other business do you see raising prices by 40% and getting away with it. It looks like only 3 cable providers are holding out on Viacoms aggressive pricing and they will come to terms. Comedy Central, MTV, Vh1, Nickelodeon and BET cover virtually every demographic in America.

  • Viacom Quietly Becoming A Cash Cow [View article]
Viacom is demanding more revenue from cable providers and it looks like they are going to give it to them. Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, BET are too important to the average demographic in America.

It is unfortunate that this will cause cable bills to rise, but with so little quality TV content out there, the incumbents will win.

to who? Spotify is basically giving away everything free except on mobile which they limit use of.

I am an android user so i cant speak on iTunes Radio but i do know Google Play offers free radio with unlimited skips and a larger database of music than Pandora. So any educated consumer that does not want to pay for music and listen to "suggested radio" should use Google Play over Pandora.

beast response. I agree, Spotify is a superior service and GOOG and AAPL can crush Pandora in a heartbeat if there was real money to be made in this bottom feeding industry segment. I wish i had the balls to go short Pandora

  • Ignite Restaurants: All Signs Point To A Big Earnings Miss [View article]
looks like you were right but slightly overstated the drop. Seems $12-$13 is the floor. The core business is strong, and the upside of converting Mac's to either Joe's or BHT gives the company quite a bit of upside in the mid term.

Good call, and congrats on the money made.

  • This Automaker Is Not A Good Investment [View article]
I appreciate your article, but i do not think think you understand Honda's business model.

First off, Honda has never dominated the truck market, and although they offer a product they do not even sell trucks in many of the countries they sell cars in.

Second Japan's lack of growth of sales doesn't mean anything, it is a mature economy. Honda is focused on winning the U.S (which it has been and won again this year with their new cars), Brazil (which they are investing heavily in to keep up with anticipated demand), India which they are doing well in, and Europe which should see demand pick up as the auto inventory is aging and economic growth improves.

Also China is not Japans core strategic market because of the political barriers between the countries. That said this may change and China could become another accretive market to Honda.

Also the cars Honda makes in the U.S and sells in the U.S is not affected by currency devaluation. (the amount of cars made in Japan and shipped to other countries is negligible and mainly Acura's that rich people around the world want that they can't get at a local dealership)

The only benefit Honda has had from yen devaluation is in stock price which is because when currency is devalued people would rather have money in commodities and equities.

  • Choose Discover over Capital One, says Sandler O'Neill [View news story]
Discover has a huge advantage over competitors in the banking business. Without long term leases and real estate operating costs (also labor) involved with the retail bank branch model will hold competitors (like Cap 1) back from mid-long term growth. Oh, and if you bank Discover you get access to thousands of ATM's at no charge all over the united states.

With the ability to deposit a check from my mobile phone, I have not been to a bank branch in over a year.

Discover is also investing in higher growth and innovative banking/consumer loans which should help EPS by Q2/Q3 2014.

Interesting analysis - i noticed the same thing and just bought shares after the market pull back.

I think Honda cars are much better than Toyota cars in terms of look, performance and resiudal value. I expect Honda to win that segment and in terms of Acura vs. Lexus i think Lexus is losing a little bit of market share to Acura. See the link below.
