  • Norfolk Southern - High Yield Link In The Railroad Pipeline [View article]
    Norman,
It's good to see you back, and I was glad to see the 5 year table for NSC. I started a position in NSC in November at 57.10, and thought I would be able to add to it at that price or better if the fiscal cliff was not settled. It has done nothing but go up since, but i am hoping that I will get another shot as I am pretty sure Congress will manage to spook the markets with the debt limit, sequestration, etc.

    Enjoy your new grand baby!

  • The Portfolio For Do It Yourselfers: What We Are Buying (Part 2) [View article]
Thanks for the update, a very enjoyable and helpful read. I bought NSC in November when it was around $57 and am now kicking myself for not having bought more. Glad to hear that you (and other commenters) feel it is a good pick for a DG portfolio.

  • Tracking Dividend Growth At The Portfolio And Stock Level [View article]
I use Vanguard and the reinvestment occurs the same day as the issuance of the dividend. As to price, I noticed that it is not the closing price; in fact, it varies -- I hold the same stocks in different accounts and I have seen the reinvestment price vary between accounts as much as $.13 for the same stock.

    Bob,
I really enjoyed this series of articles, and how clearly you lay out this information. I have held D and SO for several years in my DG portfolio, and own 10 of your core stocks. I was glad to see them on your list.

  • Improve Your Dividend Growth Portfolio By Lowering Your Risk [View article]
Thanks, Bob, for another fine article, and the terrific comments it has generated. I am a younger retiree, using my DG portfolio to supplement SSI and some pension income. I will use your risk assessment methodology (I like that link to the WealthTrace calculator) to reexamine my portfolio.

  • Retirees Beware Of The Many Dangers Of Holding Overvalued Stocks [View article]
Thanks, Chuck, for another very helpful article. I, too, am a very satisfied Fast Graphs user for almost a year. It has been invaluable in making buy decisions. Now I grapple with sell decisions. If a stock was purchased at a sound valuation, but has a big run up, at what point should I consider it overvalued to the point of selling it? I know many factors may go into a sell decision, but in your opinion, should "dangerously overvalued" stocks generally should be sold in favor of more reasonably valued companies?

  • Buy Linn Energy For The 7% Yield With No K-1 Hassle [View article]
    Norman,

Thanks for the info on LNCO. Like your wife, I don't want the tax hassles of an MLP, but this looks like a good idea in the energy sector. I will do some more research.

  • When Should I Be Selling? [View article]
    divordle,
Vanguard also will do the shares in kind conversion from IRA to Roth. I am planning to do the same thing this year, and have been waiting for a market adjustment downward. I am opting to convert the stocks with the greatest dividend growth rate, to hopefully end up with more shares.

  • Yield On Cost's Role In A Selling Decision [View article]
When I started buying MCD in 2009 and 2010 I was converting a portfolio of CDs and Treasuries with very low yields, so I feel pretty good about my YOC in excess of about 4.5% (and growing). I also like the fact that my appreciation is a hedge, of sorts, against another market meltdown.
