  • J.C. Penney Liquidity Concerns Are Overblown; Q4 Likely To Squeeze Shorts [View article]
Black friday with its one day sale should be OK but I think this holiday season will be a complete bust. The stores lack holiday decorations and up till a couple days ago and unlike the rest of the mall even lacked hoiday music. The store was so empty you could bowl in the aisles, and even black friday is starting late.
I see MASSIVE LOSSES, while others like Kohls and Macys are really appreciating all the new business ron has sent their way.

If ron had any confidence in his decisions he would release same stores sales comparisons during the holiday season.

Bet he doesnt!! He is in denial holidays without sales events, are holidays with poor sales results:(

This will all go critical as a cash crunch and lower stock price hits after the next quarter report.....

to get some solid info visit malls over the holidays checking activity and how busy the parking lots are.

A week ago here Macys was packed, while the much smaller JCP lot wasnt even half full

  • At least someone has faith in J.C. Penney (JCP): Director Javier Teruel bought $2M worth of shares on Nov. 16 in the largest JCP buy in years. Teruel’s consumer goods background as an exec at Colgate Palmolive makes him an appealing buyer, InsiderScore.com says, and his membership on the boards of SBUX and NLSN allows him to gather important consumer behavioral insights. [View news story]
JC Penney had RECORD PROFITS in 2010.....

So just why did penneys need reinventing?

  • J.C. Penney (JCP +3.5%) announces it will open for Black Friday shopping at 6:00 AM Friday, taking a shot at retail rivals cutting short Thanksgiving dinner for employees in the process (tweet). In its never-ending quest to transform retail, the company is giving out 80M free buttons with codes that could potentially lead to free gifts through its website. The promotion follows Internet sales dropping a staggering 37% Y/Y last quarter. [View news story]
gmom RJ is breaking every retail rule there is..

I think a earlier opening is fine and such practices go back to my youth, I am 55 and my mom took me to buyers mart in pittsburgh in the middle of the night.

I ave seen JCPs black friday add, it looks fine but its only a one day sale.......

no sales at all for the balance of the christmas season, according to RJ.......

Oh well he is making retail history but not in a good way. on a brite note probably no store will ever try it again........

they will look back at how ron johnson killed penneys leading to its bankruptcy and liquidation......

  • Heard on J.C. Penney's (JCP) earnings call: 1) CEO Ron Johnson calls the quarter a period of "unbelievable learning" as store traffic fell 12%. 2) Maintains customers "understand" shift back to two-tier pricing, but acknowledges the sales drop is tied to slashing value promotions. Solution = disclosing manufacturer pricing. 3) On Shops, data is "exceptionally encouraging" but little follow-through to top-line yet. 4) A tale of two companies. RJ says the startup part of the firm, he calls it JCP, is competing against the old department store which he calls J.C. Penney. Remarkably, the startup is called the fastest growing in retail history. Quick analyst take on call: Bewildering. (webcast[View news story]
No but just read the posts here that agree long term mostly full time workers are bing fired and replaced with part time teenagers.

few companies would announce to the press were doing this, it just occurs ........

  • J.C. Penney (JCP -3.1%) trades lower as more late-to-the-party analyst downgrades pour in and fresh calls for Ron Johnson's firing are heard. Questions on the retailer's financial viability in the face of same-store sales falling off +20% for three straight quarters are also being posed by more people than just gleeful JCP shorts. [View news story]
So billbob you werent satisfied with record profits in 2010? that the real problem these days chasing for unlimited profit, without regard to mrket share or customer satisfaction, that ills companies:(

Gmom I knew you would be happy at the late opening. by the time the shoppers arrive at penneys they will likely have already maxed out their cards, and spent their cash.

appears ron wants low sales so black friday matches the remainder of the year........

and whats the dirrence between buttons and coupons? buttons cost more, why economize ???

bebopr dream on its your fantasy. You happen to be RJ since your saying things will get better in february:(

My question Feb of what year?

Its obvious and RJ should have learned by now shoppers DEMAND markdowns and coupons....

Ron has stated publically just a black friday sale no other and were opening late 6AM he reportedly told workers at corporate sleep in.

Either RJ is totally incompetent, or intentionally trying to kll the chain.

I prefer to believe incompetent, if its ever found to be intential legal action should be taken to get back every last penney he got from JCP

Well dishnetwork had people working at corporate who posted everything is great while doing their normal job. dish also had some people whos jobs were to make dish look good on the net. they were PR people, I got to know them. Dish went out of their way to make the company look awesome on the net. I mostly hung out at satellite guys but would see their spin posts everywhere.......

Its just very odd that every change RJ has made are fine by you.....

and by the way the christmas decorations if they can even be called that look HORRIBLE......

zagre Sure the million moms boycott was no biggie, and for ME ellen would of been OK the gay couples on front pages was over the top pushing a gay agenda. Retailers should welcome all shoppers but not get into such situations to avoi offending people.

The replacing full time long term employees with teenagers is a well known fact and all the moves RJ has made have resulted into store sales of ??

PDT just wonder around your local store. JCP in monroeville pa near pittsburgh fired 30 long term workers, many were full time and replaced them with part time teenagers just to save bucks. some of those teenage workers look bad, dressed to hang out after school not to be working in a department store.... I guess they meet RJs dress code... why worry, sadly this chain is going down.......

gmom3 your all supportive posts for RJ lead me to believe you are a paid JCP employee trying to help your company look better on the net. I stumbled onto dishnetwork doing that and became a insider volunteer untill they changed directions to fee everything. at which point not only did i slam them publically i posted what had been going on and dropped dish...

you may or may not be doing it at managers direction...... doesnt matter. in any case RJs management of penneys is so terrible he will get canned, sooner or later.

I would like to see a indenpendent audit of his speciality shop sales per square foot claims, they smell like a rotting piece of meat left out on the counter too long.

    honne lp.

You believe the downside to RJs great attempt is limited? Now remember JC Penney made record profits in 2010, hurt only in 2011 by a big increase in cotton prices.

So along comes RJ at the end of 2011 and you give him 34 million dollars to reinvent penneys.

now here we are a year later, sales are down by half, your previous loyal customers are still shopping just not at penneys, no RJ ticked them off by elminating their favorite brands, near elminating clothes for overweight people thats over 1/2 of america today, elminate coupons, which shoppers loved, it gave them a urgency to buy, the sale is almost over, just about elminate customer service by firing a large part of your long term employees replacing them with part time teenagers, who arent invested in JCP like the older workers who were paid on comission and depened on penneys for theitr livelyhood. Demoralize the remaining workforce. Cut inventory past the bone so even if someone wants to buy its not available. Lets not forget pushing the gay agenda, not so much with ellen but definetely with the gay moms and dads on front covers. Open the aisles wide so you break an basic rule of retail, slow shoppers down in the hopes the buy something. have so little inventory for the internet side sales drop 37% in one quarter, and here we are at the big christmas selling season, barely decorate to save bucks and open late on black friday morning, just one concession a one day black friday sale. just one day.

Might RJ be trying to kill JCP?

Now lets imagine whats highly likely..... JCP under rons firm control loses 2 bucks a share at the next earnings report, Ackman bails, oh well this didnt work RJ the savior of retail finally gets what he deserves and is fired.

even if all of rons changes are reversed, you old customer base has now test shopped your competitors and many may never return.

this speciality shop idea and all these changes should of been test marketed in a limited area before being rolled out to the entire chain.

Incidently the origial president of penneys that ron replaced told RJ this wouldnt work.......
