  • iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders sold out, smaller iPhone 6 still shipping on schedule [View news story]
Overheard @ Verizon store. "LG model LG3 is sold out and no more will arrive for 3 weeks because Apple has contracted for every cargo flight out of China for the next 3 weeks."

  • Why iPhone 6 Won't Reverse Apple's Market Share Decline [View article]
"Where's your growth going to come from when you've already sold an iPhone to everybody who wants to buy one at an exorbitant price"?

As low end buyers organically rise into higher income levels they will inexorably drift into higher quality products consistent with their rising economic status. This is especially true in China and other places where status is perceived to be paramount.

  • Kantar: Android takes share in U.S., iPhone gains in Japan, WP "stutters" [View news story]
"Well in mobile Smartphones, most people buy subsidized phones, so the carrier is paying most of the price difference between a high end and mid range phone, not the consumer.

Not exactly the same as paying 1st class vs. coach".

Actually, most people buy a subsidized phone and a 2 year contract. The carrier is really not paying or subsidizing; just fronting the customer a loan.

  • Is Apple Really Doomed? [View article]
I am a pro Cook Apple shareholder but to say "Tim Cook has a very difficult job but has been doing great. No major mistakes at all" is not accurate. With Apple shares @ $705 in Sept 2012 the disastrous release of Apple Maps before it was ready was probably the largest factor in the stock price tumbling to $385 before beginning its long struggle back. Cook (and Ives) probably learned a very valuable lesson and (hopefully) will never release a half-baked product before its time again.

  • Analysts argue Apple/China Mobile deal still a matter of time [View news story]
The oft heard common wisdom/assumption is that "Apple needs China Mobile more than China Mobile needs Apple." I don't buy it. China's 2nd and 3rd largest telecoms have made gains in market share directly attributable to their carrying the iphone; losses that CM is anxious to stem. If the millions of CM subscribers who have been waiting for the CM/Apple deal, considered an inevitable sure thing by most, get the feeling that no deal is coming many would leave CM for the other telecoms.

China Mobile wants this deal badly and I'm glad Tim Cook is a tough negotiator.

  • Apple's iPhone Paradox [View article]
"Urgency for Apple to address consumers in emerging markets is nothing more than misplaced anxiety."

The most intelligent Apple article I've read this year. Thank you.

  • Sell side: 5C not cheap enough [View news story]
Apple's pricing of the 5C tells me that they did not want to entice cannibalization of their top tier 5S domestically. The $100 price difference between 5C and 5S may not be much in China but $99 vs $199 in the US keeps the 5S value perception intact. To offer the 5C at $49 or lower would have definitely cannibalized the 5S.

The pricing structure shows that Apple's priority is to optimize US sales and let China sales grow organically. The aspirational nature of the Chinese consumer may make this strategy more successful than it now appears.

  • September 10 May Be A Great Time To Put On An Apple Short [View article]
On what basis do you declare Apple's balance sheet to be opaque? It's balance sheet, income statement and cash on hand (domestic and overseas) is transparently seen every 3 months; as is every other publicly traded company.

  • "Sentiment is bad. Make that horrible," says Raymond James, upping Apple (AAPL) to Strong Buy from Buy. The team says the company stands to benefit from the new battle in smartphones - putting smartphone chipsets into things like cars, TVs, and appliances. Shares +1.3% premarket. [View news story]

  • Apple's Refresh [View article]
The WWDC in June is analogous to the laying of a foundation for a house to be completed and sold in Sept. Developers see the new platform and get a 3 month head start on app development. Apple has no history of blockbuster hardware being introduced @ WWDC. I would be much more concerned if the "house" was unfinished or unsellable in Sept.
