Robust FT requires protection against hardware and software errors. These real-time replication schemes protect against hardware outages. By far the most common cause of server outages are asynchronous transient events: software bugs, faulty device drivers, etc. Furthermore, real-time replication could introduce a software bug from primary to secondary. The proprietary FT systems from Tandem, Stratus and Sequoia protected the whole environment. So far all FT VM offerings protect against hardware outages.
