"My feeling is that Baruch is right, and the latter outcome is likely to prevail. Consumers are lazy: outside the hard core of gadget geeks, people don’t spend a lot of time worrying about whether they’ve got the best phone on the market: instead, they’ll just buy an iPhone and be done. Assuming, that is, that Apple drops its exclusivity arrangement with AT&T (T). Because that really can be a dealbreaker."
This is contradictory, if a consumer doesn't care, why would they automatically buy an iPhone? Especially if there are cheaper and viable alternatives out there. This doesn't make sense. It's like saying Mercedes makes a good car and consumers are lazy, so they'll just buy a Mercedes. Is that how the market really works? Of course not.
Further, for the layperson who doesn't really care, the appstore will not lock them in, as if they don't care, how many apps will they actually download anyway? Typically, most people find a few core apps they use all the time and the rest is kind of frivolous stuff that might be a fun game or a fart app or a mulletizer, etc. These are the apps that get downloaded, used once, and never used again.
At the end of the day the consumer who doesn't care will choose many different types of devices for many different reasons and you can't just default to one manufacturer or another. That's just lazy thinking in and of itself.

YES. Because Droid was supposed to kill the Blackberry (still waiting...) and the cost isn't in the handset, it's in the monthly data plan for $30 or more for 24 months. Pretty basic stuff.

This is classic. It's all luck for RIM! It has nothing to do with Mike Lazaridis and his engineering team? And the many hardworking individuals at the company? Just dumb luck. It was lucky RIM moved from pagers to smartphones as the market and technology changed? That's just rubbish. This is the kind of guy who blames everyone else for his own failures and takes all the credit for success when he didn't do anything to earn it. Entertaining stuff, James, keep the hits coming!

I like how you equate one anecdote to generically apply to all "businessmen" even though the term businessmen actually applies to so many different individuals - many who use Blackberries and many who use other mobile phones such as the iPhone, for instance. So in your world what you carry to communicate with defines you? What about those who carry an iPhone and a Blackberry? How do you define them?
This just demonstrates your inability to cope with the success of RIM after being fired from the company. Get a grip.

Seriously? People still don't understand the industry model, yet still make ridiculous statements. RIM has NEVER offered a 2 for 1 promotion. It's the carrier that offers the promotion. RIM gets paid its full price for each Blackberry sold.
Please do some research, gain some insights into the mobile industry and its workings before writing nothing more than a senseless emotional rant, much like our friend JamesApple, who never misses an opportunity to write something filled with hate towards RIM.

Yet Apple is often volatile as well around earnings announcements - but because it is Apple it is a special case. Does this guy actually believe the BS he vomits on this site?

JamesApple continues to be a joke. He likes to post not once, not twice, not even three times, but SIX times out of the 14 comments above. And as he posts his dribble, RIM just keeps plodding along doing its thing. At what point does this guy give up?

Let me add this quote from the conference call, which I believe is one of the most important things that will happen to RIM in the next few months:
"we talked about the web kit browser -- boy, when you can get that rendering with our transcoding and our infrastructure, you would be shocked how fast it is and how it shrinks the network consumption." - Jim Balsillie
Imagine if Blackberries had a very good and quick browser.

STOP IT JAMES! You are an idiot. If you read the transcript, listened to the call, did an ounce of research, you would see that sell through was high as channel inventory stayed essentially flat quarter over quarter. You are the worst TROLL on the internet when it comes to RIM bashing.

You have been to shown to be absolutely wrong in every one of your calls. If the definition of insane is doing the same over and over and expecting a different result, I can now firmly say you my friend, are insane! Please go away now.

Did you mean drop or POP? JamesApple, it's official, you are an idiot.
P.S. I really don't like to call people names, but seriously, this guy really deserves it over and over and over. Perhaps he will go away now?

RIM: Sentiment Drops Ahead of Earnings [View article]
(piqqem leverages the ‘wisdom of crowds’ by allowing its users to vote on the price direction of a stock and then applies its own propriety factors to calculate sentiment for a security. In their model, -100 is the lowest and 100 is the highest sentiment)
Is this really wisdom? Or a popularity contest? There is no question the world is dogging RIM right now because of all the "competition" and most recently because everyone and their brother is all over Android. As far as I can tell, the Android platform isn't living up to the hype with actual sales, but it's probably too early to tell.
The last quarter would have showed the exact opposite for RIM and we all know what happened to the stock after the release. This quarter it appears to be the opposite in that there are many negative folks out there. Perhaps it is setting up for a pop on earnings when they show they still are selling lots of devices and are participating in an expanding market.
Now of course once iPhone reaches 90% adoption (or at least the fans would have you believe), and Android garners another 9%, there is only 1% left for RIM, Palm, Nokia, WM - so maybe the sentiment indicator...or beauty contest might be correct? As the poster above eloquently states - "Rubbish".

Anyone who believes tablets will be the end of smartphones just isn't using common sense. The limiting factor is whether it can fit in your pocket or hung on your belt. If it can't, then the smartphone will continue to flourish. You simply will not see the average person walking around with a 10 inch tablet - but they will carry around everywhere they go an iPhone or Blackberry, or any smartphone with a 2-3.5 inch screen. Why? Because it fits in your pocket. It's that simple.
