  • Update: Barrick Gold Completes Its JV Deal With Ma'aden For Its Saudi Arabian Jabal Sayid Copper Project [View article]
The worst isn’t over yet as for gold after prices erased this year’s gain.
“Gold is more responsive to the near-term growth momentum in the U.S., rather than long-term inflation concerns,” Damien Courvalin, a Goldman analyst, said . “Interest is lower in gold than it was say 18 months ago.”

Get Out Of The Oil Patch, Get Out of Dry Bulk Shipping – New Paradigm Update
It is human nature to look for bargains - and destroy your portfolio as you gather losers into what used to be a ” nest” egg.
Look at Seeking Alpha and count the ” analysts” saying Dryships ( DRYS) is going to turn – how none forecast the sub dollar level it now enjoys.

  • Should You Sell DryShips? A Value Investor's View [View article]
I have indeed been in and out of DRYS and am disappointed at how the Company management never misses an opportunity to shaft the shareholders,. There is a stream of " Why DRYS Should Be Higher " leading some portfolio money to suffer yet again - " hope " overcoming experience. My point is " hope "is a poor basis for analysis especially considering the trajectory of the Baltic Index, the continued building of new capacity and the ( comparatively) sluggish China economy. There are too many much better sectors and companies available.

  • Should You Sell DryShips? A Value Investor's View [View article]
I appreciate the thoughtful analysis but the sector is best left until a turn is confirmed. The Baltic Index - now a mere 10 % of its high had retraced to 200 before falling again below 1000 and taking portfolio profits down with it.

  • Nike Set To Continue Topline Expansion As It Focuses On Women's Business [View article]
Nike: The sneaker giant officially holds $6.7 billion offshore for tax purposes, on which it would otherwise owe $2.2 billion in U.S. taxes. That implies Nike pays a mere 2.2 percent tax rate to foreign governments on those offshore profits, suggesting that nearly all of the money is officially held by subsidiaries in tax havens. Nike does this in part by licensing the trademarks for some of its products to 12 subsidiaries in Bermuda to which it then pays royalties.

  • Imminent negative surprise in store for Too Big To Fail banks? [View news story]
Some companies that report a significant amount of money offshore maintain hundreds of subsidiaries in tax havens, including the following:

    – Bank of America reports having 264 subsidiaries in offshore tax havens – more than any other company. The bank officially holds $17 billion offshore for tax purposes, on which it would otherwise owe $4.3 billion in U.S. taxes. That means it currently pays a ten percent tax rate to foreign governments on the profits it has booked offshore, implying much of those profits are booked to tax havens.
