  • The Power of 'Chermany' [View article]
The ‘Chermany’ analysis is interesting insofar as it explores the economic relationships that Germany and China each have with their respective trading partners and the similarities of both sets of relationships. We would be mistaken, however, to take away from this analysis the conclusion that either of these sets of relationships is fundamentally flawed. The better view, arguably, is that Germany and its EU partners all benefit in many ways from the EU and Eurozone relationships and that the task of Germany and its partners is to negotiate the appropriate adjustments to reduce current imbalances; too much would be lost if, on the one hand, problems were ignored, or, on the other, if the EU or Eurozone ruptured. The same can be said equally about the US/China relationship.

Describing the tensions that that exist for both Germany and China respectively in their economic relationships with their trading partners also describes the nature of the tensions between regions in geographically large federations like the US and like Canada. Such tensions, both international and domestic, remain in the background during buoyant economic periods but boil to the surface during protracted recessions such as the one currently being experienced.
