  • Facebook Sells Ads: It's Not Disruptive In Payments Or E-Commerce [View article]
Charging is the norm for all current means of cash transfer, and given the likely volume by FB, they could undercut everyone else, and still make a fortune, so why not? After all, once the software is written and set up, where is the cost? A little development work and occasional de-bugging, but these are negligible compared to owning branches or physical transfer of assets, so it would be almost entirely profit, and a 1% transfer fee would still bring in plenty!

Hey bj, are the Vinklevoss twins the guys who sued Zuch for damages, won a few million (how much do they need?) and then tried to do it again? Hardly 100% honest, so who should we believe? Besides, regardless of their contribution to the software, success is never guaranteed, and it's indubitably the Zuck who turned it into a multi billion$ company! There are far more people who have produced great ideas, and got nowhere with them (the guy who invented the precursor to the i Pod, for instance, and Mr Biro for another) than have built great companies with them!

  • How Facebook Can Use Messenger Platform To Create Billions Of Dollars [View article]
Square hasn't done too well, recently; I guess people are just more comfortable with big established companies. Will FB try and undercut established services? That's be fine with me, as they have the capacity to undercut right back, and we should all benefit from lower charges...

Yawn; yahoo and others have been doing this for years, as have several newspapers, so what's the big deal?

This is all very well for FB users, but the rest of us can already get our news from the likes of yahoo, or from the many free on-line newspapers, like the London Standard, so what's the big deal? It certainly isn't going to convert me into a FB user. What it might do is reduce even further the quality of what is available. I've noticed, for instance, that yahoo news, which used to create its own content, to which a comment section was the norm (the best part) but since it started using feeds from other publications, it has become a mishmash of different styles, including videos which are rarely compatible with the system I use, and opportunities for debate have become few and far between. Is this supposed to be progress?

  • Bank Of America: Why The Stock Just Got Hammered [View article]
Having once done a summer stint in a benefits office, I was forced to the conclusion that the system works best when everyone claims their full entitlement, whether they really need it or not. If they don't, the only winners are the scammers, and if you believe in a consumer economy, then the more claimants there are, the better it is for the economy.

True, there's always a snob value element in expensive products, but it is irrelevant where industrial usage is concerned, which is sure to have affected the price to be had for low quality natural diamonds. That said, industrial diamonds do get used up at a fair rate, and need constant replacing, which should offer price support to some extent.

Maybe not, BM, but when the acquisition isn't making any profit, then maybe they should; that 19B$ has to come from somewhere!

What "potential in China", U3? They already have their own equivalents, and just as established FB users will be reluctant to move to a competitor, so will Baidu users be reluctant to change, even if they get permission, FB will find China a tough market!

They can always invite their users to send in news articles, which seems to be the trend, where newspapers are concerned. It wouldn't do much to maintain quality of writing, but that's going down the drain, anyway, given how many articles are now done automatically. Expect to see many more examples of lines like "This soldier's helmet saved his life "after" (?) it was hit by a bullet. Surely, it should have been "when"? Or did it unstrap itself and give him first aid?

  • Facebook Messenger Is Now Equipped With Payments: Where I Was Wrong, Right, And Way Off [View article]
Come off it, R; you don't make any profit by just holding the money. It has to be invested, or loaned out, and both of those take a great deal of effort and knowledge, which also costs.

  • Facebook Messenger Is Now Equipped With Payments: Where I Was Wrong, Right, And Way Off [View article]
"Facebook could easily make 5% on the deposits"? Really, M? Automating accounts is one thing, but loaning money quite another, as it requires massive man power and experience. I'd expect they'd have to go into partnership with one of the TBTFs, and they'd want their labours compensated for, as well as their cut of the profits, so given today's rock bottom rates, I very much doubt FB would make much on it!

Maybe, but the way I read it, they'd have done better to cancel any payments altogether, to give Luna the maximum chance of recovering; it has potential for a "spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar" outcome.
