  • AMD's Strategic Position In The Gaming Industry [View article]
    @ Justin Jaynes

Those articles are 3 years old, they are utterly irrelevant now. as I keep saying, seemingly to a brick wall =P, Game developers are now in AMD's pocket.

Also, let me show you something about the Batman game.

First notice the better performance on the AMD GPU's vs the Nvidia GPU's http://bit.ly/12wBnuo

But this, this just takes the biscuit. this is a fundamental flaw with all Nvidia GTX 600 series GPU's, they simply cannot handle to much texture fill, no where near as much as AMD GPU's can.

    http://bit.ly/15IlGpU

Notice the decline in performance on Nvidia once the MSAA get turned up high, the 7870 in that ends up faster than the (on paper) much higher range GTX 670, Nvidia's performance falls off a cliff.

This is why you don't see a lot of games benchmarked absolutely maxed out, because if they do Nvidia's GPU's begin to choke.

Now... this test was done on Nvidia's own optimised game.

On Micro stutter, you need to look at AMD's latest 13.5 Drivers, Micro stutter was a problem which AMD admitted was and said they would fix, they have, it was simply a software memory addressing glitch.

@ J. McRoberts, Your making blanket statements that do not fit the facts.

just in case you missed it...

"AMD next GPU (Volcanic Islands Hawaii GPU 20nm) Also looks very very impressive.
    http://bit.ly/18Y9rSd
to put that into context: the current 7970:

    SP's: 2048
    Bus Width: 384Bit
    ROP's: 32

    @ $450 is 30% slower than Nvidia's GTX Titan, which costs $1'000.

    Now. Volcanic Islands 8970 Hawaii

    SP's: 4096
    Bus Width@ 512Bit
    ROP's: 64

Its almost 100% more GPU, it will probably come in at $700 and utterly humiliate the GTX Titan, smashing it by some 60% while Nvidia's coming GTX 780 is just a cut down GTX Titan while the rest are re-badged GTX 600 series GPU's

AMD are going for an all out full on attack, no more messing about."

That's ^^^^ then, and it will put Nvidia very very much on the back foot

Currently, AMD are now the ones working with Developers. to give you one of the best examples while its also not uncommon these days.

    http://bit.ly/17Xjp7V

Tomb Raider, one of the many (now AMD titles) not only does the 7970 beat the GTX 680, but it also beats the GTX Titan.

Your idea that Nvidia have all the developers on their side while AMD are left to pick up the pieces is out dated and wrong, its very much the other way round now.

And with AMD now being in all Game Consoles and going Cloud Gaming that will only continue.

End of 2013, most likely Q1 2014, AMD will probably launch a couple more HD 7000 series GPU's in the mean time to keep Nvidia honest when they launch the GTX 700 series next month.

More here. http://bit.ly/15Vv8Ft <- thats a real application.

    Temash = Jaguar

As you can see the 6w Jaguar Tablet: is faster than Intel's ~17w ULV Netbook chip.

And Games not running 8 cores is also wrong, all of the latest AAA titles run 8 cores, Tomb Raider, Bioshock, Crysis 3.... which incidentally are all AMD titles, as will all future ones, like the very anticipated BF4.

Here is an example of what can happen when a game runs 8 cores.

    Crysis 3 http://bit.ly/16gNgKe

    See that, AMD's $150 FX-8350 beats Intel's $250 Core i7 3770K

All games from now on will be 8 core because they are all optimised for the AMD hardware game consoles.

AMD have their fingers in all the game developers pies to make sure they are.

Yes and i'm tired of it, AMD's future looks much better than a lot of these articles suggest.

Its short term investors knocking AMD down with these strange Shillish bashing articles once AMD's price gets to a certain point.
They sell at this point and hope these articles do the job of knocking them right back down to $2, then buy in again waiting for it to climb back up to $3.... then start that process all over again. every time.

Just let it be and it will slowly get back to $5 in time.

But not for much longer, The Desktop Gaming market is shrinking at an alarming rate and Nvidia's share in that is shrinking faster than AMD's http://bit.ly/Xi7Tz3

Nvidia is almost entirely dependant on their GPU sales, if they can't keep up the level of revenue they currently have the whole thing comes crashing down, Nvidia are already shoving up prices to compensate for that shrinkage, and a result of that is more and more are moving over to AMD. i see this happening day in day out.

Nvidia did not shrug off Sony and give AMD hundreds of millions of $ in potential revenue, only an idiot would believe that.
    We are not idiots.

Nvidia were dropped from Sony because none of the game developers support Nvidia anymore.

Have you not noticed that every game coming out of late has an AMD stamp on it?
Did you not get the memo that EA and AMD have partnered up?

Why would Sony use Nvidia if game developers will not support that hardware?

You shouldn't listen to Nvidia's Shills making up none-sens to avoid looking like they lost out big, which they did.

Do you really believe Nvidia gave up Sony because there wasn't enough money in it for them? given the state of the Desktop market they would have to be idiots to give up any revenue and any clear path out of the dying desktop market, although Nvidia's shills would have you believe all is well in desktop gaming, right?
Even if they did there is no way they would give up having games pre optimised on their hardware instead of AMD's, which gives them a huge advantage.

One should always be wary of any investment.
    But what your talking about...
Take a sip of reality, Good Grief.... sorry but your article defies it.

  • AMD: Rain Or Shine? [View article]
    I forgot to add:

Cloud gaming does not beam directly into any random TV, you need a compatible device to render the data.

In that Both Microsoft and Sony are designing their game consoles with that in mind, not only will they be compatible, but they will also have their own cloud gaming systems.

In that Microsoft has already signed up to AMD's infrastructure http://onforb.es/Ys58x8

“From our perspective it’s very exciting. NVidia is a great partner and we’ll work with them as well, but they don’t control both sides of the gaming industry like AMD – GPU and CPU. As we optimize it’s very helpful in building a balanced system.”

In other words that's Nvidia supported but politely shoved to one side as they don't and can't offer what AMD do.

That has been the invariable theme with all main game developer and gaming hardware makers (Nvidia dropped by Sony in the PS4) and it will continue.....

Smell the morning Coffee, the writing is on the wall.

A lot of people don't listen to Intel's Shills and recognise that AMD have a clear way out of the declining Desktop market.

The Nintendo Wii U was never intended to be a part of that plan, it was always going to be a microscopic fraction of their revenue, its a kind of pity contract, "yes ok, you can have the IP for this out of date GPU, now go away please"

Whats more the xBox 720 and PS4 will be extremely popular, if you don't know that then you don't understand that market.

    On cloud gaming. http://bit.ly/ZMYpPf

They are in partnership with the worlds largest game publishers EA

AMD also own a server company (SeaMicro) which has IP that is specifically designed for cloud gaming.

The truth is all partners that matter are moving away from Nvidia to AMD because in there own words AMD make the complete package and their GCN and Heterogeneous System Architecture is so much better.
If there is any cloud gaming to be done you can bet your life its going to be on AMD hardware because that is what all developers are coding their games for.

AMD also have an exclusive Vizio partnership for Tablets and other Mobile computing because in their own words AMD's low power Z-60 and Temash APU's are better than ARM and Intel's, Which they are.

AMD are on the move, they have a sure way out of a dying market while Intel and Nvidia are fighting for the scraps left over in the Tablet space, you think they can survive on that?

Never mind AMD, i'm looking at Intel and thinking "any day now people who thought they knew a sure thing when they look at them are going to get a huge shock"

  • The GPUs integrated with mid-range and high-end versions of Intel's (INTC) upcoming Haswell CPUs could be a threat to AMD and Nvidia's (NVDA) discrete GPU sales, ZDNet points out. Intel claims the GPUs, codenamed Iris, will deliver a 2x-3x performance gain (depending on the CPU model) over the ones integrated with comparable Ivy Bridge CPUs. However, more power-efficient Haswell ultrabook chips will ship with HD 5000 GPUs (though Intel still promises performance gains here). Integrated GPUs (both from Intel and AMD) have been steadily taking share from discrete GPUs for years. (more on Haswell[View news story]
    I don't see how.

It may match AMD's Trinity. but there old and no longer shipping. it has been replaced by Richland and later this year we will get the Jaguar based Kaveri, which will double performance while cutting power consumption in half.

There is a lot of bluster by Intel over this, all of it aimed at investors, they will get in before AMD with Haswell. but its not going to last long.

AMD already have a working prototype 6 watt Tablet APU with twice the performance of Intel at half the Power consumption.

The Tablet variant is called Temash, there will be an APU variant late this year, and its whats already going into the new xBox and PS4 game consoles

Yes "roughly equal to a Core i3 ULV" But you need to look at my post again, and do some research on this stuff.

The Core i3 ULV is not a low power Tablet chip, it is a mid level Notebook chip (17 Watt TDP power probably 14) this Temash IS a low power Tablet chip (6 Watt, TDP probable 7 or 8.

    So look again.

    Core i3 3217U (Ultra Low Voltage) @ 1.8Ghz (17w) = 1.8
    A6-1450 APU @ 1.4Ghz (6w) 1.39
    Core i3 2367M (Ultra Low Voltage) @ 1.4Ghz (-17w) 1.34
    A6-1450 APU @ 1Ghz (4w) 0.99
    Atom Z2760 @ 1.8Ghz (2w) 0.56

You also need to add an iGPU thats 3x faster than whats in the Core i3's, which just makes that whole power envelope even more fantastic.

For the Moment AMD's Temash has vastly better performance per watt. Intel have a lot of catching up to do and Bay Trail is not going to do it, not by a long way.

You need to look at my initial post again, and do some research on this stuff.

Yes the performance is "it was roughly equal to a Core i3 ULV"

Which is a 17 Watt laptop chip.

AMD's Temash performance per watt is way off Intel's charts.

    Temash (Tablet chip, 6 Watts 7-8w TDP) = 1.34 @ 1.4Ghz
    Core i3 ULV (Notebook chip, 14 Watts 17 watt TDP) = 1.8 @ 1.8 Ghz

Add to that the iGPU is literally about 3x faster than the iGPU on the Core i3 ULV, no exagiration.

Cinebench is not a synthetic benchmark, its a real world rendering application, its a real life test of real world performance not just because its a real life app, but also because it pushes the CPU to the limit.

You need to know what your talking about before you start dismissing things out of hand.

The fact is Temash have twice the performance per watt on the CPU and about 6 times the performance per watt on the iGPU.

Intel are so far behind 'in this' its not even funny any more.
