  • Apple (AAPL +2.3%) is close to a TV content deal with Time Warner Cable (TWC -1.3%)and has hired Hulu exec Pete Distad to handle negotiations, Bloomberg reports. The news service once reported Apple has made the most progress with TWC in its talks to provide set-top boxes to pay-TV providers, and TWC (unlike some of its peers) has said it's comfortable giving up control of the UI for hardware carrying its services, provided it can maintain control of the customer relationship. The WSJ has also reported of Apple/TWC talks. [View news story]
Doug and bgold - I couldn't agree more. CDN's (content delivery networks) - I have been preaching forever that Apple should dive deep into this space - are the play and it's going to really hit cable hard. And, if I was Dish and Directv, I would be on the watch too. Video from legacy networks such as what cable and satellite have is changing and they are going to have to conform if they want to be in business.

It's about damn time. Apple now needs to focus on the content if they want this iTV thing to move rapidly.

  • What iPhone 5 Discounts Could Mean [View article]
Ha Ha Paulo! I read the script and I'm too close to the subject matter to be objective but I will still see as will many I am sure.

  • What iPhone 5 Discounts Could Mean [View article]
Thanks for the post Paulo! Thought provoking stuff as usual.

The iPhone 5 shipments continue to slow. This is all about the supply chain and moving inventory. I think September is best case for the 5S.

And to the person above who said "Sculley was a loser", get real. He was the wrong person for the job. And, Sculley and Jobs were blinded by each other and their competing egos didn't let them see/fix reasonably until it was too late. And now it's 2013. Only reason to rehash that is to tolerate going to see Kutcher as Jobs (even though I am intrigued to see what Matthew Modine does as Sculley) on August 16.

  • Apple (AAPL) amends Tim Cook's stock compensation package to tie it to the performance of Apple shares. Previously, Cook was guaranteed (provided he remained CEO) 500K restricted stock units in Aug. 2016, and another 500K in Aug. 2021. Now, only 100K units vest in those periods, and an 80K-unit annual award is given until 2021 provided the performance of Apple shares beats at least 2/3 of S&P 500 companies in a given year. The award gets cut by 25% if performance is in the middle third, and by 50% if in the bottom third. Apple says it wants to tie a portion of exec. compensation to performance, and that Cook "is leading this initiative by example." (8-K[View news story]
The only difference is there is now Sarbanes-Oxley.

I have no issue with this. Correct move. CEO's salary should be tied to corp. performance.

  • Apple: iOS7 Might Be Another Shot In The Foot [View article]
What do you guys think about the fonts? Personally, I hope something changes between beta and GA. They look very basic - I would have hoped for something a little bit more creative from AAPL. Maybe it's a move away from skeuomorphic that Jony was not a fan of. I don't know. I thought Susan Kare's comments were very telling - what she didn't say (v. what she said) about the fonts. Looking forward to the 5S and iOS7 release.

  • Can Anything Bring Apple Back? [View article]
Apple marches to the beat of its own drum and makes sure its customers and shareholders needs are met. AAPL does not do what critics tell them to do. Everything (for the most part, we all diverge to an extent) AAPL does is methodical, on brand and on plan. I think AAPL is deeper into corporate than we think. Personally, if AAPL can find a cool way to unify content, that would be huge, nobody is doing it well.

I agree with PD's comment "bring apple back"? They didn't leave. So I don't see where the title and your content mesh. But, I thank you for the post. Good stimulation for comment.

  • Apple (AAPL -0.3%) announces iTunes Radio, its expected Pandora (P +3.2%) rival. The service is normally ad-supported, but is ad-free for iTunes Match ($25/year) subs. It supports Pandora-like station building and sharing, is integrated with iOS' Music app, and gives users the option to buy songs. Pandora has turned positive after trading lower earlier. Also: 1) Siri has been overhauled, and now includes Wikipedia/Twitter content, Bing (MSFT) results, and both male and female voices. 2) Apple launches iOS in the Car, a solution that mirrors iPhone content on in-car displays and is supported by 12 automakers. 3) iOS 7 also brings automatic app updates, a Photos app with automatic sorting and Instagram-like filters, and AirDrop file-sharing. Good stuff - The Bing thing (not to be confused with The Bling Ring) sounds cool, I like the more interfacing with Twitter (can AAPL just acquire Twitter already?), love the new Mac Pro, Jony is all over the software which is fantastic. I'm not too sure why we have to wait until fall (Sept probably) for iOS update probably to release it with the 5S. What did y'all think? I didn't get to watch live blog or live stream. What was good/not good in your opinion? So, did Phil REALLY say "Can't Innovate, my ***"?
