  • Spanish open source group Hispalinux files a protest with the European Commission against Microsoft (MSFT) in which it alleges the company makes it difficult for customers to switch to Linux. The EC levied a heavy fine against Microsoft earlier this month for failing to offer users different web browser options. [View news story]
This boat has sailed. With most people on mobile devices, this group is fighting yesterday's battle.

  • Google Narrows Offerings, And Narrows Market In Turn [View article]
This decision is one of the reasons it is challenging to bet your business on Google. You may decide to utilize one of their technologies as strategic to your business, but if Google don't see it as strategic to them, they kill it. Sometimes it's better to pay for something and know it will be there rather than hope that it will. Not saying RSS is leading technology but for some people it is important.

  • Avoid Microsoft For The Long Haul [View article]
Longer term looks like Samsung has designs beyond all the current software partners with the arrival of Tizen on the scene. It was only a matter of time before another hardware manufacturer though "hmmm, the software guys always keep their price constant, while our hardware gets better and cheaper, we want a piece of this". What they have that Google, Apple and Microsoft do not is also a strong eco-system by way of TVs in living rooms. The software players do have add on hardware, but Samsung are kings on the TV, so my bet is they want to pack more into that connected TV.

  • This Is Why Microsoft Needs Nokia [View article]
Excellent article, even if some of the comments reduced to the old love/hate nonsense that always seems to be on such sites. There are enough people in the world to associate Nokia with quality and thus people give Windows Phone 8 a chance. I agree that Microsoft needed a big name like Nokia to achieve success, if necessary via this Trojan Horse approach. I also agree that the Windows Phone 8 OS seems grown up compared to Android/iOS. I know people won't like to hear that in this App centric world but it is a very efficient phone OS.

  • Microsoft A Dream Buy Or Sell? [View article]
You can't say they missed the move to smartphones....they were there first but Apple perfected it with the iPhone. Same with tablet devices.

I would say Microsoft is not standing still and it puts a lot of cash into R&D. It just needs to be nimbler.

The cloud offerings and X-Box (new device due in 2013) are doing well, Dynamics is well received and Office continues to be the main game in town for desktop productivity. Windows 8, while it has had a mixed reaction will begin a new era in touch devices, expanding on the market Apple created for Tablets. Windows Phone 8 is a wonderful but as yet unloved operating system for smartphones, but MSFT have deep pockets.

In some ways Apple has more to fear due to the narrowness of its product line up and the fact that they have always got to be better than multiple OEMs building for Android and Microsoft OSs, who can launch products on a more frequent cycle of update.

I don't see it as being beyond Microsoft to re-invent themselves for a new era. It's pulling all the diverse pieces together that's tough.

  • Google Isn't A Monopoly If Consumers Choose Speed Over Options [View article]
All fine but what you are essentially saying then to service suppliers is "advertise on Google or you are dead".

Then when everyone advertises on Google, what you pay in Google tax determines if you are seen or not.

Monopolies can occur even without intent. In many posts I see people actually believing Google can do no evil but remember once you are quoted on Wall Street, you have pay masters.

There are many Androids, not one - that is part of the problem. What corporation is going to feel confident about its security in such a scenario?

  • Android Is Dead, Part 3: The Numbers [View article]
My only argument with the analysis is how cleanly the four OS options average about 25% each. Life is never that clean so I would expect at least one disruptive element to skew the numbers.
