Considering Timber as an Asset Class [View article]
I just found this article. Very interesting to me as I sell timberland "fee simple" to investors, primarily as an investment for retirement. I had just come up with an idea to use the precious metals market as an analogy to timber markets about 6 mos prior to this article. Timber may be an asset class, but it has 3 very distinct markets. As timber grows, it also changes class and "market". This is how you can avoid risk on a long term, up to 8 yrs basis, if you buy at the right time. Like buying 1lb of silver and 8 yrs later it not only growing into 2 lbs, but now its gold! Or, your $5.00 avg priced 1-ton of pulpwood grows into 2-tons of Chip-n-saw which is $20 x 2 tons - your $5 investment grew into $40.
