  • Will Tesla's Earnings Exceed Expectations? The Company Won't Match Its Valuation Either Way [View article]
Range anxiety is an urban myth propagated by those who don't own a Tesla. How can you comment and hypothesize on range anxiety if you have not had any real experience upon which to draw your conclusions? Trust me, plugging in every evening is a reliable habit, providing 250 miles for the next days driving - never any range anxiety in daily driving. Road trips require simple planning with the online supercharger network map, knowing your range and stops ahead of time. Never had range anxiety on my road trips. I suppose a fool who heads out on a road trip without knowing where their superchargers are located could have range anxiety - but come on, do you really think Tesla owners are fools and regret their purchase due to their range anxiety?

  • Is Tesla Model S Really A Quality Green Car? [View article]
Wrong place to try to justify a short thesis based on quality and service...many owners here. My P85 has 18k miles in 18 months, no. 5898 built, and other than a minor door closing adjustment, NO problems, issues or concerns. I've been contacted proactively by the service center for a couple of items, they delivered a model S for me to use while they serviced the car and returned it to my home with a nice detailed wash included. This is the highest quality vehicle and best service experience that I've had in forty years of automobile ownership.

  • Tesla Motors draws criticism in Germany [View news story]
Means they're worried about their future market share. TSLA can always convert to a new standard when it makes economic sense and on their own terms, but right now daimler and bosch are locked out and in the weaker position in their own market.

PS> One year in and my P85 has been flawless and enjoyable as the first day I took delivery. The US dealer whining about service and "consumer protection" are weak and ridiculous arguments. TSLA = disruption...interesting to watch others lose their brand equity and credibility.

  • Market Tops Start With Champagne And End In Tears; Washington May Trigger This One [View article]
Hard not to agree with your analysis. Since I have time to watch the daily market, my portfolio is all cash, using portfolio margin to trade weekly options (selling OTM calls/puts for premium where historical volatility exceeds implied volatility - with a skew towards call sales) for income and return. This portfolio affords maximum flexibility to address the crisis du-jour in an opportunistic and short-term manner.

For example, I'm strongly considering selling some ES futures tonight - just can't see the optimistic bias established last week extending into this week, given the news flow.

My main concern for my portfolio approach is currency risk, where being in USD will lose value. However, at the moment there is a major disconnect in the GLD/$ relationship, where GLD is slumping irrespective of QE and potential future inflation. In the crisis you mention, GLD should be moving in the other direction. Also not sure oil and gas will hold up well, especially as domestic reserves increase. The demand destruction in the crisis will cause oil/gas to slump as well, offsetting the currency debasement.

So, I'm at at a loss as to where to hide out, other than 100% cash and a very, very short investment horizon for option sales and opportunistic futures trades. If GLD reverses, I would feel much better about the overall validity of the thesis. But we are definitely not headed further into the "new normal". In my opinion, it will be the "more abnormal"!

  • Upset Alert As Marissa Mayer Takes Over Yahoo [View article]
One of the babies, either Yahoo or the newborn due in October will be getting the short end of this deal. Another head-scratching decision by the board of one of the most dysfunctional companies I've ever encountered. But hey, score some PC points for hiring a pregnant turnaround CEO who's never been a CEO nor managed a turnaround, arguably one of the most difficult management tasks one can undertake.

  • The recovery appears to be uneven across different states, Wells Fargo says. New York and California will rebound the fastest, while Florida will be among the slowest, and "nowhere in the country does the economic picture look bleaker than in Nevada."  [View news story]
Nevada is basically one city with one industry that is entirely dependent on consumer discretionary spending. Comparing it to New York, California and Florida is statistically irrelevent.
