The Chinese Consumer in Time of Financial Crisis

This post paints a rosy picture on small segment of Chinese consumers, emphasizing spending behavior of the only child in well connected families. In this respect, it is fairly accurate. High end consumer goods are still selling very well in China and expanding. Remember Nieman Marcus never see depression.

But overall, China, an export-driven country, has been hit hard by the world financial turmoil. In addition to $600 billion stimulus package proposed by the central government, the local governments have proposed a $2 trillion package, but the source of financing is in doubt. The central bank lower the interest rate again on Monday. Over all, things don't look that rosy.
