  • Google's (GOOG +0.1%) sell-side PTs have been surging as shares continue trading above $900 following a torrent of I/O news. The I/O news demonstrates "Google remains one of the most innovative and forward thinking companies of this generation," gushes Topeka, which has raised its PT to $999. Baird's PT is now at $1,025, and Argus' at $1,065. In some respects, the mood resembles that surrounding Apple not too long ago. [View news story]
yea google is a great company but i really doubt advertising..and that is their main revenue source. So many people nowadays have adblocker (including myself) so don't need to watch ads on youtube or have ads pop up anywhere on the internet. Even so, i have never clicked on an ad in my life..unless by accident.

In response to a few of your points,

Google use a subsidiary in Dublin then the money is transferred to Bermuda which has a 0% corporation tax rate.

Google owns many subsidiaries holding Intellectual property rights which over invoice Google for using them. This reduces Google's (parent company) profit to a very small amount.

Ireland doesn't make much from this..they actually only got around £1.2m in taxes...Google paid 0.2% of its profits in taxes in ireland.

But in the end its the Parliament's fault. They have the power to make/change and remove laws. They should make a very simple tax code that is a few pages long. At the moment the Companies Act 2006 which governs UK company law has over 1000 sections...the more complex the law the more loop holes can be used.

  • Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) Tim Cook is set to testify before Congress during a hearing about corporate offshore cash. He's defending Apple in advance, and says the company will offer tax reform proposals. 2) Though a number of big hedge funds pared or unwound their Apple positions in Q1, the number of "top-tier" funds with positions held steady at 148, per Insider Monkey's analysis. 3) A couple of intriguing Apple patent applications: one for an iPhone-based e-wallet with transaction-specific "smart menus," and one for a large-display touch sensor panel meant to improve response times. [View news story]
The UK has made Google, Amazon and Starbucks all discuss their tax in the parliament. Nothing has happened of it though.

    My theory...

    1. Tiger management sells Q1 as stated so was months ago...maybe even before christmas.

    2. Apple bottoms at $390 and goes up to $466...

    3. Tiger management missed the boat for buying back in.

    4. Tiger management decides to try to knock down the price to buy in at a lower price by publicly announcing they sold their shares several months ago.

    5. Shares dropped around 7% or so.

    6. Tiger management is buying on the drop.

On the other hand, Tiger initiated positions in Dunkin' Brands (DNKN - 546K shares), Monsanto (MON - 192K), McGraw Hill (MHP - 408K), and H&R Block (HRB - 849K). AAPL -1.1%. they sell maybe around $21m worth of shares (if around $500 a share)..this causes the shares to lose over 2% today and another 2.5% if this was the cause for yesterdays drop...makes no sense.

  • Apple (AAPL -2.5%) has dived over the last 30 minutes of trading on heavy volume, without any news to explain the move. The decline comes with the NASDAQ still up 0.5% on the day. [View news story]
Im guessing the drop was from the news google is releasing a music streaming service..this will obviously be a big rival if apple brings out one.

ill just respond to a few of the comments below..

First of all no need to get overly emotional about a stock. I am myself very overweight on apple at the moment. 48% of my portfolio to be honest. I do also believe that the rebound is completely justified and there is more upside. Only i don't believe its good for a stock to rise so much so soon. I wouldn't mind a couple days of sideways action before more upside.

rocback- surveys like that are utter pish written by bad journalists. This "coolness factor" survey is made by people who change their minds on stocks faster than the wind changes. I believe that apple hasn't ever lost any cool factor.

    relayer75-
You cant determine with technology companies what they will be like in coming decades. It just takes one product to change the game completely. As you can see with Apple, they were doing quite well with iPods but nothing spectacular but when they released the iphone they rocketed.

    Marketingmaven-
I still don't understand how you don't know the difference between the likes of companies like P&G to Apple..seriously? Apple makes apple products and brands them as apple products. P&G didn't create most of the things they sell. They make acquisitions e.g. Gillette and sell. They have huge diversity which reduces risk which apple doesn't have.
Furthermore, you seem to mix up the the strength of a company with its stock. Its not the same thing. If you want an apple reference...Apples FY13 Q1 reported record profits and revenues, - stock goes down.

you can't compare apple to the likes of P&G or any kind of 'buffet favoured stock' as although apple sells a lot of iphones & iPads at the moment, they are surrounded by competition which grows.

The likes of P&G sell round about the same amount of goods each year (with small increases every year) as they are products that people use every day.
From this P&G can constantly deliver dividends and buy backs with a resulting higher earnings per share.

What im trying to get at is that although the likes of P&G don't sell products that create large growth, they are very sustainable to sell them year on year.

  • Apple: Too Far, Too Fast? [View article]
The shares are a safe bet for the upcoming months. Id think up until their product launch or conference. The earnings call next will no doubt show increased earnings per share as we all know there will be a lot less shares! :)
