  • The Federal Reserve says the S&P downgrade will not affect bank capital requirements as "the risk weights for Treasury securities and other securities guaranteed by the U.S. government, government agencies, and GSE's will not change."  [View news story]
This is a legacy Obama can be proud of.... he actually brought the most powerful country down without a shot. A day after his 50th birthday.

I suppose next stop is junk bond status.

  • The House and Senate have struck a deal that will temporarily end the partial shutdown of the FAA. The deal, to be voted on Friday, doesn't resolve the broader issues that divided lawmakers, but will keep the FAA open through Congress's vacation and allow thousands of furloughed employees to return to work.  [View news story]

From what I understand hte House is out of town. Harry finally relented and passed the bill - looks like typical dem political grandstanding.... cry and cry and then pass the bill. I gotta believe their base has got to be tired of this....

  • The Senate votes to table the Boehner debt plan 59-41.  [View news story]
As you run closer to the election I think you are right - but right now I'd be hard pressed to believe that 90% of the country is that entrenched.

Justifying the facts to fit ones perspective is always true....my wife does every time she comes back from the store.

I love stats too.... about 58% of the total population >18 is registered. And of the registered voters about 89% vote (2008). I would bank that of the registered people that favor the Tea party you'd probably find the percent that vote >95%. Which means that about third of the people that vote favor the tea party - which probably balances the hard left groups, and leaves about 1/3 of us somewhere in the middle.

  • Paul Krugman assails the media for failing to "acknowledge the one-sided role of Republican extremists in making our system dysfunctional." Making "nebulous calls for centrism, like writing news reports that always place equal blame on both parties, is a big cop-out," Krugman writes, which "only encourages more bad behavior."  [View news story]
I'm guessing you'll probably see more of them....

  • The House passes the Boehner budget bill, 218-210.  [View news story]
I can pretty predict the outcome of this mess - Obama wants to be re elected so bad he can taste it and the Boehner bill has us revisiting this in about 6 months which will hurt / kill Obama's chances. So the democrats HAVE to remove the short term provision, they have already begun to talk it up.

Sooooo Boehner and Tea party will give on the short term provision and stick Obama with the more cuts and probably the balance budget amendment so he has a chance at getting re elected. Obama's base is pretty much ate up with hate of the repubs and will forgive him by next November. If Obama blows his re election ObamaCare is gone.

The republican plan is the best - it will bring the problem to the people, we can be socialists or capitalists.

  • The CBO says Harry Reid's debt reduction plan would save $2.2T over 10 years, but the 'devil is in the details.' The bulk of those savings, around $1T, will come from one source: reductions in the defense budget and de-funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  [View news story]
You would simply move the work somewhere else, and it is typical short term thinking.

  • House Speaker John Boehner's debt plan is going nowhere, as it faces opposition in his own party and Pres. Obama threatens a veto. Sen. Harry Reid's plan, or a modified version of it, that even Larry Kudlow seems to like now appears to be the only remaining way out of the impasse.  [View news story]

John has risen to the most admired person in congress. He only one to stand up and do what is right.....

He does what he says, and doesn't play with words like Obama

Obama could allow that happen by letting us vote on the debt limit in the next election cycle but one of his stipulations is that the limit be raised high enough to take us past the next cycle.

This is one of sticking points in the current process

  • The U.S. has wasted $34B contracting for services in Iraq and Afghanistan, a draft report by a bipartisan congressional panel reportedly shows. The money includes funds diverted to insurgents for "protection" and losses from unsustainable projects that may be abandoned in the future.

That is an amazing amount of money..... I'd love to see what it bought, or who is holding it and why.
