  • Papa's Q4 Tech Top-Up [View article]
Thanks, Papa. Another fantastic article. Your kindness in contributing at SA has directly benefited my family. Upon your past articles [and comments on other peoples articles] I've traded in and out of HIMX making a nice profit in the family portfolio along the way.

I took a breather after selling out, and now I'm ready to jump back in.

Thanks again for your superb work!

  • Has A Buying Opportunity In Baxter International Occurred? [View article]
Great write up. I initiated a position in BAX when they came on my radar a couple weeks ago. If there is another pullback to the low 60's I'd double or triple my position.

  • Professional Oil Investors Crushed By Duplicitous Nature Of Oil, Mathematical Ignorance [View article]
However, we can and DO export refined petroleum projects. Perhaps, then, it's best to keep things as they are. If the spread is great enough, we'll be exporting gas, jet fuel, etc. Means more work here.

One thing that proponents of globalism miss is that it sill is easy to better the US and the West on labor, environmental and other legal/bureaucratic expenses.

In the meantime, we WILL start exporting natural gas as LNG and perhaps CNG. Freeport just received a pro forma green light to include exports to not trade agreement signatories. This will help take care of the glut in the US market AND keep the prices low enough our manufacturers and utility rate payers also 'win'. I like that!

TOT, I thought the same. Was rather amazed at the 'bigs' making such a bet. Well, other people too the opposite side of their bets and made out well. Wonder who?

  • Freeport-McMoRan Retires Debt, Prepares New Growth Phase [View article]
Great article and an excellent value. Still not trading at the pre-oil/gas acquisition price... and those assets are 'free' to purchasers of FCX at this price.

Thanks for your excellent work. FSX had disappeared off my radar and I'm happy to be reminded. Just put in a limit order after reading your article and doing additional DD.

  • Textura Has A Huge Moat And Is In The Early Innings Of Tremendous Growth [View article]
I really like TXTR. Can't help but wonder if they didn't go public a tad too early; however, that's water under the bridge. I'm most curious to see the quarterly report.

    Nice article. Long TXTR.

  • Protected Principal Retirement Strategy: Is There A Mortgage REIT That Can't Be Beat? [View article]
PS- for those who do not immediately need the income, dripping MFA is another wonderful thing. I do so in a taxable account and it's grown by leaps and bounds over the past four years or so I've owned it. It alone, will provide a nice chunk of cash each year by the time I'm ready to stop DRIPPING and take the cash each quarter.

If you look at Chuck Carnavale's FastGraphs, the 10 year growth of MFA with the dividend dripped was over $35,000 on a $10,000 investment. Not shabby in the least and it's a low beta stock.

  • Protected Principal Retirement Strategy: Is There A Mortgage REIT That Can't Be Beat? [View article]
SO, which I happily owned for several years, has been experiencing financial woes with the expansion of one of their power plants. Cost overruns and time delays. While I don't think the dividend is in trouble, I don't think the share price will do much appreciation, nor would I look for a dividend increase any time soon.

A couple of points on MFA, as I've owned them since 2009 and thus, follow the performance closely:
    1. MFA normally trades in a range between $7-$7.75. Early 2013, the share price rather shockingly went up well over $9/share. Anyone seriously looking at the past history of MFA would have wondered why the price was comparatively skyrocketing. Thus, the 'drop' in price, was back to it's normal, steady range.
    2. Speaking of steady, the dividends have been consistently in a range of 18-22 cents per share, since I've owned MFA. Thus, they have not 'cut' their dividend.
    3. In fact, they've had two special dividends this year in addition to the four quarterly dividends. This is surplus reserves they'd set aside to offset losses, which are no longer needed and rightly being distributed to share holders.

While mREIT's certainly aren't for everyone, out of all of the mREIT's I've looked at over the years, MFA is a standout. No, it won't ever be as 'sexy' as some of the high fliers. However, it's consistency is a virtue that has been a wonderful thing in my portfolio and that of my 83 yo father, whose portfolio I manage.

I also own JMI, having bought when it 'went on sale'. Even with the dividend cut, I'm still doing well. However, as it is a newer mREIT, even though it's part of the Apollo world, I'd recommend MFA as the consistent, reliable alternative for those on a fixed income needing a bit more return at a comparatively lower risk. [meaning in the higher dividend world risk, not compared to KO or MCD, for example]

Just thought I'd add a bit of color to your good article.

  • Warren Buffett's Wrong Way Exxon Mobil Bet [View article]
I'd be curious to know why he chose XOM over CVX which arguably has done better for shareholders over the past decade. I did well on my XOM holdings, but sold them out near the peak earlier in the year. Continue to hold several hundred CVX shares.

Time will tell. Long term, I do think XOM's large nat. gas holdings will be a boon to the company. Unfortunately, they did buy near the top and with the glut of US gas coming to market, has hurt XOM, per Tillerson.

  • Baker Street Capital's Big Bet: The Next Catalyst To Drive USA Truck Shares Higher [View article]
My guess is either Knight or Baker increasing their stake in a relatively short period of time drove the price up as there was more buying interest than sales interest at the sustained lower price.
