  • 10 Investing Books To Consider  [View article]
Great list (as I expected) and I certainly second including Graham, Klarman and Penman, all of which I have read and re-read a few times now.

One left off that's worthy of multiple reads is "Richest Man in Babylon". For personal finance, I strongly recommend "Your Money or Your Life". Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street" is another must-read.

Best of the season to you!

  • How To Avoid The Worst Sector ETFs: Q3'15  [View article]
You might want to have another coffee - the article highlighted SCHH as one of the cheapest, which is generally considered a Good Thing (except by competing ETF providers).
That being said,'s quite well done list has the slightly more expensive Vanguard fund as it's advisor's pick, likely for the far better size and liquidity.
I would go with ratings over USA Today anytime.

It would be the decision of the Highway authority or local gov't where to put up guardrails, and their decision as to the specs for guardrails that they buy and put up.
Road location and design determines the need for guardrails - they are decisions by state DOT's and local gov'ts. Governments are constrained by never-ending demand for roads and never-ending demand for lower taxes. So in the end, the ultimate responsibility lies with... to paraphrase Ogo Pogo... "I have seen the enemy, and it's us".

Absense of guard rails a worse problem:
eg: Marshfield MO - 2 crashes in 3 weeks on one curve - one involved a crash into the wall of a home
eg: Cleveland GA - Man arrested for putting up his own guardrail at the scene where his daughter was killed
Google news or better news searches will turn up many more

The should spin it off to isolate the risk.

Governments will have to pony up millions to buy a guardrail or other safety equipment if these lawsuits end up resulting in producers making payouts.

  • U.S. rig count plunges in past week but still exceeds year-ago count  [View news story]
The Cdn counts always go down in late-Dec, likely due to Festivus for workers from out of province. We won't know how much is due to Festivus and how much is due to the price drop until mid-Jan, methinks.

In the meantime, according to last Wed's EIA numbers, Cdn exports to the US remain near record highs.

I am reminded of Graham's description of Mr. Market over in the neighbouring farm during times like these.

  • MFC Industrial: Misunderstood And Undervalued With 45% Upside Potential  [View article]
Fans of the S&P 500 Heatmap provided on FinViz take note: The MIL stock listed in health care is not MFC, but now inactive Millipore, which was an index constituent when operating.
FinViz seems reluctant to update their HeatMap to keep up with changes in the index, as well as changes in market cap (which are displayed as box size on the heatmap).
When pulling up financial info on MFC on this and other sites, be alert for old Millipore data getting included.
