I can see the Knowledge Graph augment the Lang invention, but it would be crazy to totally remove the Lang mechanism. It cannot be worked around without severely affecting the ranking.

  • AllThingsD: Ford's Mulally now heads list of Ballmer replacements [View news story]
The biggest complaint we have heard about MS is NOT their ability to innovate, but their internal politics and in-house fighting. They have (or had) a lot of technically bright people. Sure, they didn't do a good job, but they did "invent" the tablets, the smart phone, the smart watch, etc. Mullaly's job is not to innovate per se, but just remove the road-block for the people underneath to innovate. I don't see him any worse than a Ellison or a Cook at all. Either him or Elop would be fine. Elop has more potential, but riskier. With Mullaly, I can't see MSFT went too off the rail.

MWinMD, you said it yourself, it's only "potential". It is like NOK / Win Phone added a potential 700 millions customers last year. The market is far from being efficient, but it has spoken.

@William, all you had to do is check AAPL historical price when the iPhone 5 was announced. Enough said.

  • Microsoft Doubles Down On Nokia Mobile: Now What? [View article]
sonofcaan, i disagree. If you work in large IT enterprise like myself, you will realize that the enterprise support from Android / iPhone is pretty lacking (and current Windows Phone as well). There is definitely an opportunity there. Many pundits think the Lumia move by MS means they are focusing on the "devices" space and ignoring the enterprise space. But who says MS can't make Windows Phone both an enterprise phone and a consumer phone? I.e. a BB-like phone for the enterprise, and which the end users don't feel embarrassed when carrying it around after work?

Humble, nobody is building a Windows phone now anyway, so what's lost?

(I do realize the OME's do build Windows Phone, but it is insignificant for their top / bottom line).

  • Microsoft buying Nokia's Devices & Services unit, licensing IP for $7.17B [View news story]
The tricky part about the Surface is MSFT directly competes against their OEM, they can't cut prices aggressively. Those OEM's also produce the PC, the servers, the laptops, etc. - MSFT bread-and-butter. With the phone, the situation is completely different. I'm quite sure no OEM is making any money with the Windows phone. MSFT is going alone in this battle.

There are not that many in Finland anymore. The people that are still there are R & D, etc. which they want to keep short / mid-term anyway.

tftf, you are absolutely correct. The feature phones are probably just something MSFT wants to keep around just to get the mind share of the users while they are preparing an ultra-cheap Windows phone. I predict MSFT will aggressively cut prices now to gain shares in the market place, especially in the enterprise space. I don't care what NOK PPS does tomorrow, I'm shorting BBRY.

I'll go short at that level. The deal provides breathing room for NOK short term. Mid-term, they have no catalyst for growth. Do you trust the board with that extra cash? What would they do with it?

They probably can't agree on the price. The Feature phone is probably a condition that NOK imposes on MSFT. I mean seriously what would NOK do with the feature phones?
