  • Goldman's Cohn: "Abnormal" lack of action in markets [View news story]
They can make money from their own prop trading, but not from clients. Nobody feels like they need to hedge or trade, hence revenues go down.

  • A First Interview: Microsoft's Satya Nadella [View article]
People don't understand tech companies. They got to where they are today because they have invented / were / are the leader in their sector. To ask them to use their retained earning to create values is pointless. The only time when that makes sense is for them to acquire talents and head off the young upstarts. If you want "to truly use your resources, including your retained earnings, in a way that will create value" then you should invest in the likes of Berkshire. Tech companies don't fit into the typical mold of finance management that is taught in MBA courses.

Man, I totally hear you. Windows is so bad that all companies in the world use it.

Looks like you are from China, so I can't comment on Chinese Bing. In North America Bing is pretty good now.

Agreed, unless one is sophisticated enough for some complex arbitrage. Not a game for 99% of retail investors.

  • Vringo Wins Key Victory Over Google Revenue; Awaits 7% Royalty Decision [View article]
VRNG is a trading stock, not an investment stock. On balance though, it has a good risk / reward ratio.

I agree with you. Having said that, what I've found interesting is the wording of the ruling, where the judge references other previous cases for his reasoning. Maybe I read too much into it, but there are some hints about his thought processes, and they are positive for VRNG.

  • Vringo jumps following favorable damages ruling [View news story]
Without a ruling on the alleged work-around, it's impossible for any settlement. Having said that, it seems like the court is starting to make rulings on this case and the work-around issue may get addressed soon.

After the appeal. Both the parties agreed to that. Not sure why from VRNG's perspective.

  • Google's search algorithm overhaul could spell trouble for Vringo [View news story]
I can see the Knowledge Graph augment the Lang invention, but it would be crazy to totally remove the Lang mechanism. It cannot be worked around without severely affecting the ranking.

  • AllThingsD: Ford's Mulally now heads list of Ballmer replacements [View news story]
The biggest complaint we have heard about MS is NOT their ability to innovate, but their internal politics and in-house fighting. They have (or had) a lot of technically bright people. Sure, they didn't do a good job, but they did "invent" the tablets, the smart phone, the smart watch, etc. Mullaly's job is not to innovate per se, but just remove the road-block for the people underneath to innovate. I don't see him any worse than a Ellison or a Cook at all. Either him or Elop would be fine. Elop has more potential, but riskier. With Mullaly, I can't see MSFT went too off the rail.

MWinMD, you said it yourself, it's only "potential". It is like NOK / Win Phone added a potential 700 millions customers last year. The market is far from being efficient, but it has spoken.
