  • Vringo (VRNG +5.5%) spikes higher after announcing the USPTO has affirmed the validity of its '420 patent, which is one of two patents being asserted in its legal battle with Google, AOL, and others, following a reexamination. Google requested the patent be reexamined in May '12. The USPTO had previously made initial rulings rejecting the validity of the patent. (PR[View news story]
Is this final, final? Can GOOG appeal? I think it still can?

  • iOS 7's (AAPL) support for physical game controllers should worry home console vendors (MSFT, SNE, NTDOY.PK), thinks BGR's Jonathan S. Geller. A combo of iOS game controllers, high-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi links, and Apple's AirPlay tech for the wireless mirroring of an iOS display on a TV (via Apple TV) could replicate a console experience at a lower cost, while also allowing gameplay to be continued on an iPhone/iPad away from home. For now, home consoles maintain a decent graphics quality edge. But mobile processors are quickly narrowing the gap. Nvidia's (NVDA) Shield Android handheld console also supports TV mirroring. [View news story]
The people who can afford an iPhone can afford any console and content. MSFT actually has the best theoretical advantage in this use case, as they own the end-to-end experience, from phone to cloud to Xbox. They have trouble executing though

Strange article. I was expecting life-co's, and such, not expecting tech companies at all.

  • Vringo (VRNG) subsidiary I/P Engine settles with Microsoft (MSFT) to resolve patent litigation pending in federal court. Shares +11.9% premarket. (PR[View news story]
That 5% clause creates so much uncertainty. I wonder what those 6 patents are. Maybe MSFT is overtly attacking GOOG (and others) via VRNG.... this is so fun to watch.

  • Backing up scoops from The Verge and Eurogamer, the WSJ reports Microsoft (MSFT) has developed prototypes for a cheap set-top "for streaming video and other entertainment options." Past reports have suggested Xbox Live and casual gaming support will be part of the package. Microsoft is keen to extend Xbox Live's living room clout, which has grown considerably in recent years - a large portion of Live's 46M+ user base already spend more time consuming music/video content than playing online games. They want to make sure the content is age appropriate. If you have young kids, you would appreciate that.

  • Apparently behind the mid-afternoon drop in the S&P 500 (SPY) (a not insignificant 10 points), the soaring dollar (UUP), and sinking commodities (GLD, USO) was the rumor of a Jon Hilsenrath article set to hit the WSJ claiming "tapering" of asset purchases is coming sooner rather than later. Thus far, nothing is up. [View news story]
Lake, you are talking about the market, while Tack talks about the economy. The market is driven by the fundamentals (economy), but also by liquidity. When the punch bowl is taken away, there will be effects on the market. There is no doubt about that. For example, AAPL, MSFT, etc won't be able to borrow cheaply to pay dividends / buy back, which means their share prices will drop. Without the cheap money, investors won't buy house in bulks, which will affect the builders, the mortgage service, etc.

  • Suncor Energy (SU): Q1 EPS of C$0.90 beats by C$0.15. (PR[View news story]
Nope, the estimated EPS is .75 or .74, so it indeed misses. The estimated EPS is net, not ops. Having said that, there are some one-time items that affects the net, so the result is actually not bad.

  • Apple (AAPL): FQ2 EPS of $10.09 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $43.6B (+11% Y/Y) beats by $1.1B. 37.4M iPhones, 19.5M iPads, just under 4M Macs. Expects FQ3 revenue of $33.5B-$35.5B, below $39.3B consensus. Buyback increased by $50B. Shares halted. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR[View news story]
But that is like a 25% ROI. We know a "hit" product such as the iPhone/Pad returns much more than that. So, in effect, AAPL is saying they don't see another "killer" product soon.

  • Even The Bulls Are Becoming Wary: Can We Trust The Market Any Longer? [View article]
Who said anything about JGB? I was talking about the US bonds. The scared money is moving to the US, that is why the dollars, (US) stocks and Treasuries all rise.

Re: "So, in that environment, you have two options: stocks and commodities." I'd like to differ. To the (say) Japan and Cyprus citizens, Treasuries look pretty good. That is why both stocks and bonds have gone up. The question at some point is will the economic fundamentals catch up to the price actions.

  • Windows Phone's Uphill Battle In The U.S. [View article]
Call me crazy since I'm long NOK, but I think it'd be beneficial for NOK if MS introduces it's own phone later this year. All other OEMs have practically abandoned Windows Phone platform. NOK can benefit from another wave of marketing Vis-a-Vis a MS phone.

Actually I am well aware of the syncrude sweet. I used to own COS! I pulled out because it kept running into operational problems for (seemingly) quarter after quarter. The older technologies that it uses really hurt.

RS, you are right; but they are able to do that because they have an upgrader, which is not economical at all - that's why SU cancelled their Voyager project.

  • Nokia (NOK -0.2%) needs to release a Lumia phone with a 5" display, argues IDC's Francisco Jeronimo. "“People are using smartphones in different ways now ... A 5-inch screen for a smartphone just feels right in the hand." Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S IV features a 5" 1080p display, while Nokia's flagship Lumia 920 uses a 4.5" 1280x768 display. A Nokia spokesman says the company is assessing consumer interest in larger smartphones. [View news story]
