And they gave greater discount to Europe and America. They want to win the market share back.

  • Oil takes out $50  [View news story]
@Investor: I agree if one is trading Oil and for the long term. However, if one trades the O & G stocks; there may be more bloodbath to come yet. There may be more goodwill / assets write off in the next couple quarters; which will scare the heck out of the market. That's when to buy.

Commodity is trading in trends. It's one of the instruments where trend trading has historically been shown to be statistically true. Until there is a strong indicator, the trend won't reverse easily. Many people tried to fish for the bottom last week and now are getting whiplashed. Too early.

What is missing from the headline is they are getting more oil per well compared to last year thanks to better techniques. The total output is still on track to be higher than last year at this point. After this week's bloodbath, it will probably change. However, production won't go down as fast as some may expect.

Well, I'm not trying to be a smart a.. but technically speaking, one could go long Vale and short CLF based on that thesis. That would have been a 20% gain.

CVE has a lot of attractive assets, but the management is sub-par. I expect they will follow ECA footsteps and divert some of their assets to unlock values. A patient play though.

They only need to build net-new pipeline from Québec Eastward. They will re-use the existing lines from Alberta to Ontario. Québec is the only province that has any potential concerns.

  • Microsoft to acquire Mojang for $2.5B  [View news story]
It's about cloud and mobile. Players can set up servers on Azure for cheap / easy. Cloud can unlock all sort of advanced Mods (since it has so much more power). The cloud servers will enable larger communities. In and by itself, it won't be accretive significantly to the bottom line, the value is the cross-selling / branding of the ecosystem to the end consumers, especially teenagers segment.

  • Minecraft to join Microsoft
IMHO, it's about branding (and hence cross-selling). Minecraft by and in itself won't contribute to MSFT's bottom line in any significant fashion.

  • Minecraft to join Microsoft
Quote: "Microsoft's investments in cloud and mobile technologies will enable "Minecraft" players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the "Minecraft" community" => this is the rationale behind the purchase. If MSFT doesn't screw this up, it will be a good marketing / branding for their cloud and mobile services to retail consumers.

I don't think it can grow much more. The real value will be to have the game more enhanced for MS ecosystem; make an enhanced version for the Xbox, windows phone, etc.

  • George Soros Is Betting Against The Market And Why Investors Should Take Notice  [View article]
@Irish, very funny: he said gold is the ultimate bubbles, he then established a long position, and then he sold (before the major crash). Bottom line is he's a trader, and traders change their mind on a dime. Your "has been bullish on gold" is actually very misleading.

  • George Soros Is Betting Against The Market And Why Investors Should Take Notice  [View article]
@Ryan, do you actually know what his actual position sizes / book values were? He's a trader, not an investor (i.e. he's different from Buffett). As a trader, loss is a normal, matter-of-fact thing (heck, even "value investors" like Buffett still made wrong bets). In fact, with proper sizing / risk management, one still makes money even though he is only right 30% of the time. You are a self-proclaimed "quant" (per your user name), you should appreciate that fact. It doesn't matter if Soros lost billions in 1998, what if he made tens of billions before / after 1998? (I don't know if he did or not, just saying). Cherry-picking some individual trades of a trader is like looking at trees within a forest. In the end, Soros is one of the richest guys in the world by trading, and there is no disputing in that fact.
