Somehow figuring out profits of financial and none financial American corporations to US and world GDP might help somehow? My point is, I think..., what are real profits of 'real' useful (productive) US corporations (corrupt financials removed from the equation) historically and now? Easier said then done I guess... Jean
High quality stuff. Thanks. Love these type of innovative and original articles. To bad you don't write more! I guess you have a real job...
On top of reporting overseas earnings in a cheap dollar American corporations are productive, well run and, except for financial not overly corrupt. They are generally competitive with a relatively cheap, hard working and productive labor force. There is a reason off shoring is starting to go in reverse... maybe offshoring crooked financials would help America overall?

What a beautiful day! Over 20 million shares sold today with over 90 minutes left of trading...
Mann buying the shares was supposed to be a vote of confidence in the shares (turning a bad situation into a less bad one I guess) but the bots didn't see it that way?
Do you think any naked shorts are going to jail for this? Obviously, as usual: no. Enough to start wondering if the SEC want the destruction of our capital markets pure and simple.
Bought a few more shares today. Strange how they come in 50-100 shares packets! What a computer driven financial market we have. Basically a few bots sold me shares. Are any humans trading any shares of Mannkind?
What will happen now that the stock is naked shorted to lower stock price ( a criminal offense) into “threshold securities” with a huge amount of non naked shorts? 13 days to deliver if I recall correctly?
Imagine if Mannkind announced a partnership in the next week or so! Now that would be a well timed event.

You are right that where Afrezza fits into the armamentarium of diabetic therapy is far from settled. Could Afrezza be used with metformin earlier and replace the other pills which are of dubious benefit? Now that is a market!
Being long Mannkind might not work out but being short is just foolish.

I have maybe more faith in hematologists... They are, generally speaking, a sophisticated bunch. I worked for over 10 years in a teaching hospital specialized in hem-onc and am pretty confident hematologists will figure this out (to the benefit of Incyte). Some cytokine rebound would be a logical event post abrupt JAK inhibition withdrawal but this should be easily manageable IMO. Pure speculation but maybe JAK upregulation is more central to MF, PV etc then to RA et al. and therefore comparing RA patients with withdrawal to MF patients with withdrawal just doesn't work?
I used to like Galapagos a lot but haven't followed them for a while. Just to much to keep up on... It was an amazing spin off from another of my favorites: Crucell. Sadly they were taken over way to early. I and many Crucell ex-shareholders are still mad at Bruce (as if he cares!).
Do you follow Galapagos? If I could only do this full time...

jsandresen1, I would be very interested in seeing your references, data or expert view from Stanford that backs up your point of view.
As for: ======================... There is not a single clinical study or evidence of any kind demonstrating their drug is anywhere near effective as Hydrea or Peg INFN. Nor would a licensed hematologist use the incyte drug for treatment. ======================... You lost me on that one.
As for: ======================... There is not much upside to this new drug. You should be looking at other companies. ======================... I would also be very curious as to what biotech company you would consider better picks then Incyte.

Jason, Thanks for the reference. I hadn't seen it. Interesting read although it seems to me to be a reasonable article and more rational then their NEJM piece. To use a simplified analogy: withdrawal of JAK inhibition would seem to be like withdrawal of b-blockers and so many other drugs that we use every day... I think clinicians will understand these things well and gain experience in titration that will be of benefit to patients with MF. Titration might even mean much longer linear use as clinicians can deviate from strict protocols. The article you link almost seems to be an explanation (scientific apology?) for their NEJM 'hit piece'?
At these prices I might soon be long YM Bio but then again there is my trust (or lack of trust) in this strange company. It's the kind of company I would really have to look over a lot and talk to (question!) management 'face to face' before investing. Their strategies over the years with other drugs just raises to many red flags for my taste.
The recent downplaying of expectations by Incyte management seems wise in my opinion. Thanks again,
I doubt this was simply a financial hit (although nothing is impossible in academia in this new corporate academia 'coop') but possibly not Mayo? I am surprised by the sharp difference in the Mayo patients with the bigger trails?

Hi Jason,
Good article. I have been a big fan of Incte for a while and bought a bit more on the recent dips. It is very possible that an approval wouldn't raise the price very much and that as, you say, investors want proof of sales.
I'm trying to figure out what you were thinking in the middle of your article (where it seems to be cut off): ======================... It expects to be able to begin sending product into sales channels within 14 business of approval. Management expects a slow ramp, peaking in

Not sure why the market seems to be giving more value to the company after this proposed split? How will each be valued in one year? I can't wait to see the market cap of the 2 in a year or so...
Lilly should do the same. Dump their pharma business and keep the rest in 'core Lilly' so the shareholders would end up with 2 worthless companies instead of simply one.
Warren Buffett Was Right: Ignore Political and Economic Forecasts [View article]
Ignoring major macro events (geopolitical and economic) can also be seen as illogical when these major macro events can dramatically change valuations. A major banking crisis in Europe can scrape a lot of good ideas for a very long time. Basic value is important but then again in the context of a big banking crisis or major war (Iran anyone!) value changes quickly.
Investing is obviously subjective (as all none mathematical metrics are) and not taking into account big picture events seems to simply be weaker then looking at both big picture events and micro value. I don't think Buffet or any wise investor would council to ignore macro.
Buying Santa Fe was a micro and macro play for Buffet. He didn't buy the 'best run and cheap' trucking company but a railroad because it had multiple advantages. Some of those advantages can only be seen through the macro perspective.
Ignoring 'macro fear' (but understanding it and using it to ones' advantage) might be a wiser analysis of what Buffet (and so many others) have said?
Buying when 20% of banks in Europe are on the edge and there is no European political solution to a monetary-political problem can be great timing if valuations justify it. I just don't see valuations (fear) reflecting what could (will?) be happening over the next few months.
