  • Why I Bought Arch Coal [View article]
A video from Harry Dent released recently mentioned 2015 is the start of some loosening on export restrictions of energy products. Back in the 70's, the US energy industry (oil, coal, etc.) were restricted in exporting energy products. 2015 will include some loosening of these restrictions. However, Harry Dent overall message is the world economy will enter a deflationary period (which I don't necessarily agree with because severe supply restriction can boost prices and avert deflationary trends.)

  • Why I Bought Arch Coal [View article]
I am buying the bonds of these coal companies... 10% yield or more with under 5 years to maturity.

I track the 200sma of over a 12 coal companies. Never more than 50% are trading over there 200sma at anytime during the last four years. The trends are horrible. I will buy coal stocks when I see 9 out of 10 coal stocks trading above their 200sma (which is common in about 2/3 of the industries today).

I own CPB when it trends up and I sell covered calls. It's still priced above what I paid, but I do not want to own this stock if it falls below its 200sma.

HCP is often compared to other REITs with better dividend yields and earnings growth. HCP risk is not low in my opinion.

Down 20% Y/Y is dismal. What is the REIT exposure since theater building ownership is wrapped up in them?

HPQ stock is on a nice upwards trend. 10% annual dividend increases are also a big plus to DGI buyers.

  • RetailMeNot Not Bothered By Google's Search Algorithm Change [View article]
This scenario reminds me of companies in the nineties that had their revenues linked to Microsoft products and services. They would fly high until MSFT identified their business as a market MSFT could enter and use as a growth engine. People under 40 won't recall this.

Today, Google will enable companies like SALE to fly high and then view their market as a source of growth. But now, it's actually easier for GOOG to do this.

8 out of 20 of the coal stocks I track have share prices below their 200sma. This industry needs to be on an uptrend before it's time to pile in. We're not there yet.

I bought some of ANR bonds. Over 10% yield and less than five years to maturity.

  • 2014 Market Correction Survival Guide: Prepare For The Worst [View article]
If you plan for the stock market to 'bounce back' from any corrections, then decide how many years (3,5,etc.) it may take for the following upside to return the market back to its current level. If you don't need access to your investment for those years (3,5, etc.) and have the willpower to stay in the market, then don't panic. You certainly can make sure you own income-generating investments (dividends, etc.) to generate some positive cash-flow, which can enable you to buy more equities at depressed prices.

  • The All-Aristocrat Team: Dividend Stocks You Can Trust In An Uncertain Market (Part 1) [View article]
There are more choices than picking a stock for fifty years or burying your money in a bucket. (You gave a good example of using a 'false dilemma' in making a point.)

I would propose establishing an account that has some form of management activity.

The odds of finding a stock that will still be traded in 50 years is very, very low. Get a newspaper from 1965 and read the stocks that were traded back then when people loved stocks like Eastman Kodak.
