  • Obama: "Extraordinarily dirty" oil extraction is reason for Keystone concern  [View news story]
Marpy, no disagreement on demand for Canadian select, a lot of refineries are optimized for it, but it doesn't displace the Venezuelan or Saudi heavy.

  • Stocks slide as jobs report ups fears the Fed may raise rates as soon as June  [View news story]
So the Fed needs to slow down the "overheated" economy because too many citizens are finding work? Bond traders, real or algo, panic as always, and as always, prematurely. Reality is a lot less dramatic.

The Venezuelan government owns Citgo, on of our largest refineries. Citgo imports Venezuelan crude and will continue to do so, XL or not. Another major refinery. Motiva, is half owned by Saudi Aramco. Obviously they use Saudi heavy. There won't be a lot of displacement from the XL. Maybe some Mexican crude.

  • Crude Oil: EIA Report Not As Bad As It Might Seem, But Still No Inflection Point  [View article]
Unsustainable because the cash flows from drilling new wells is negative and a company can only do that for a limited period of time. Even the best drillers, like EOG and APA are cash flow negative now. Production drop has to do with the nature of decline rates in shale. 70% in the first year. Fewer new wells drilled, the decline rates come into play. APA, for instance is cutting their rig count by 70%. For now, companies will drill only their best prospects, but won't be exploring away from their core properties. What would make shale production sustainable at $75 or $50 or whatever is a dramatic drop in drilling and completion costs. rig rates, pressure pumping, proppant costs, cementing, gathering etc.

$10-20-30.....doesn't really matter because everyone knows it is unsustainable....$75 is what the market is using to value oil companies now.....with the ferocity of the cutbacks on capex; EOG, APA etc. when shale production does slow it's likely to decline a lot faster than most expect due to decline rates, curtailed drilling and practically no exploration.....keep buying dips.

If the Saudi's keep this up long enough to damage the producers sufficiently, economically and physically through forced asset neglect. they can guarantee themselves 10 years of $100 crude when they are done.
