  • From Pain To Gain: Using Investment Losses To Lower Your Tax Bill [View article]
Rtfield - Totally agree with your thoughts. When it's revenue (Tax on Capital Gains) for the govt, they want it immediately. However when it's loss (Deduction on Capital Losses), they have a limit of 3K.

    Totally unfair.

    BDC,

Is there anything equivalent of BDCL for MLP's ? Just wanted to analyze if it works over there as well, although I know MLP's are more in natural resources.

  • Best Buy (BBY) is making its price-matching guarantee, initially a holiday season promotion, permanent. Starting on March 3, the company will match the prices of "all local retail competitors and 19 major online competitors in all product categories." The glass-half-full view: Best Buy will cut down on showrooming, rob online rivals of a major selling point, and change consumer perceptions. The glass-half-empty view: Best Buy can't afford to do this, given the extra overhead it has, and those who shop online on account of its convenience won't change their habits. [View news story]

  • Berkshire Hathaway on Sale - Financial Times [View article]
When one firm acquires another and the acquisition is accounted for purchase accounting, the diference between the acquisition price and the book value of the acquired firm is called goodwill. It is amortized over 40 years, though it is not tax deductible.

Goodwill is NOT an asset - The difference really is a measure of growth of assets. So based on that, I am guessing this small gap won't be there for a long time.
