  • Nokia Will Outperform Apple [View article]

    This is an interesting contrast.

Which is better diversified lineup or a focused one?

There are good arguments on both sides. You highlight a risk for the focused lineup where if one product fails you create a huge risk to the company. However you can be diversified and do poorly also. Look at HP. It is a diversified company and while it is not dying it is floundering with major strategic issues given its dependence on PC's.

Microsoft also has strategic issues. Why else has it taken the direction it has with Windows 8? It now supports ARM because Intel has failed to offer a compelling low power product which is desirable for mobile devices. It is introducing its own tablet alienating its partners because it must feel that selling the OS and applications is not good enough.

The tablet market while only two years old continues to grow and is now a major piece of the traditional PC space. In a few years it is projected to be as large as PC's by itself threatening Microsoft's survival. This is why Microsoft is doing what it is doing because its own analysis must show that what it was doing was not good enough in the face of a focused company like Apple that only produces a handful of product lines.

Nokia is going through a product transition which is always a trying time. In thinking about it I do not know what they could have done vis a vis Symbian, but it seems there were several events over the past 2 years that could have been handled differently,

This rushed 'launch' is another case of self inflicted wounds. It seems in some cases the new management team is learning how to run a company.

Would it have been better to launch the product when it is ready? To produce video and still shots with the actual camera rather than a hack job? I think it would have led to a smoother and more positive launch than what they actually did.

Thank you for the link. It is good to see a third party do head to head shots. I cannot blame the ad agency for Nokia's missteps. This is their product launch, not the ad agency. If they choose to use faked material it is on them not the ad agency. The buck needs to stop somewhere and that rests with the company.

It will be interesting to compare polls like this with phones sold in the 4Q 2012. I would bet that the iPhone outsells Nokia Lumia. We shall see.

Apple did address the concerns you raise.

    1) connector. It is a connector. In the end why do you care? One nice feature is that either end works just as well. That is good design. It is smaller so Apple can design a thinner phone.

    2) longer not wider - in their demo they said this enables you to handle the phone comfortably with one hand.

    3) LTE - this is where the industry is going. They are late for Verizon but on time for their other carriers.

    4) new screen tech - this allows them to make the phone thinner and lighter.

This is a good piece of hardware. It will sell well.

So far the consumer disagrees with your assessment.

The pre-orders is very good. ATT announced that the sales of the phone on their network was great. It will be interesting to see after the X-mas season what the best selling phone on Verizon will be considering they are historically behind Android in a big way.

  • Will Amazon Cannibalize Its Own Sales With The New Kindle Fires? [View article]
What happens when buying on Amazon means taxes? This will happen and it will hurt the value proposition.

I guess the counter to your argument is yes, Amazon is investing in their infrastructure and that is hurting margins but is good for the health of the business. Their pressure is killing companies ( Borders, B&N, Best Buy, etc )

If enough of the big boxes goes under there will be no competition and they can raise prices and margins.

Amazon has a great franchise but until this happens I think a 300 PE stock with shrinking profit is not a good investment.

  • What Does Apple's Streaming Music Service Mean For Netflix? [View article]
I think Apple would do better to just extend their current offering. Unless they can somehow do something hardware wise to a proper TV that makes it a compelling buy they would have much more effect selling more $100 boxes which becomes a gateway to an expanded iTunes.

The iPhone is not the RAZR. One is a phone the other a computer platform.

Is the value of the patents not already known? We have had the sale of patents/companies. As you point out NOK gets a nice stream of revenues.

You mention navteq and the gps navigation companies. Is this not being devalued everyday with the advent of smartphones and this technology provided for free?

Purview is supposed to be one of the main selling points of the new phones. The ads around it are a joke. What the company is implicitly saying is the technology is not good enough for us to actually use it and show you how great it is so we substituted other equipment to take the still photos and the movies to imagine yourself using it. This is a huge black eye. Perhaps this technology is really cool and useful. Why did they do this for the launch?

  • Apple: Wait For A Lower Price, Or A China Mobile Deal [View article]
650 is about a 5% move from here. Now much of a call.

The rest of your article is fairly reasonable. However if you wait for these events to happen before you buy you will miss the move.

If you believe in the Apple story over the next year it may be best to just buy now and wait for the numbers to roll in and the consequent price increase of the stock.

  • What Does Apple's Streaming Music Service Mean For Netflix? [View article]
"With Apple TV coming out in the near future"

Do you mean an actual TV or a set top box which will be the next iteration of the current product?

Either way it is about content. The studios do not seem inclined to give up their cable deals for electronic distribution.

  • Google Knows How To Cover All The Angles [View article]
"Focusing on Google's core market of smartphones and tablets, the bigwig is not lagging behind."

Google's core market is search and ads. Smartphones and tablets are but a gateway to its core market.

"Google is always a step ahead."

So Google developed their touch based Android interface before Apple released their iPhone? Google created the current tablet market and is the one that defined and created the standard? Google is in fact a fast follower it is not the leader.

Facebook has its problems to be sure. But it is the biggest and best social network platform available. Google failed here too.

I am not minimizing Google's strength and technical ability, but their strength begins and ends with search and ads.

  • Things Left Unsaid At The Apple Announcement: More Significant Than What Was Revealed [View article]
Yes. When China Mobile comes to Apple it will be a huge event.

The question is when? Who knows.

Apple has to emphasize software over hardware because the heavy lifting on the hardware side is over and they have a lot to do to make the software experience sublime.

  • Is Apple Running Out Of Ideas? [View article]

This has been true for some time now.

There are many who still see the iPhone as the Cadillac of phones. I think that with LTE it will rise to the top of Verizon. Not so sure about Europe, but the iPhone 4 free is a very good phone. I wonder if they will keep the 3GS in production.

I also wonder if the lawsuits will create friction with Samsung. By that I mean will they have to change enough things that people will notice differences in the two products or has Samsung done enough to know what customers like and remain king?

In reality from a hardware perspective the phones have been the same for some time now. I think by the second quarter of next year we will know how things shake out.

Will Win 8 have any impact? Will Samsung still be king? Will Apple still sell as many phones as they can make? Will the Asian white box phone continue to gain share?
