  • Hey Google, Lose Your Focus, Lose Your Shirt  [View article]
A glaring hole in your case is Apple. Apple was far from its central mission when it came out with the IPod. They also were way off the conventional computer manufacturing track when they decided to become a retailer. Remember Gateway computers? They didn't do to well at running their own retail stores. Companies can and do reinvent themselves and have success in doing so. There are many variables that are also at play in the process. Having a game changing product is first and foremost. One of the other key pieces is execution.

Oh by the way, Sony was a consumer electronics giant whose
Largest and most important product category was Television, The Walkman, which morphed into the Discman with the advent of CD's back in the 80 was never even close to being their dominant product category. Sony, like all the other giants in the consumer electronics business tried to make legitimate MP3 players in the mid 2000's. They just couldn't get it right (remember the Zune?) Apple operating outside of their core mission of being a computer manufacturer, took a chance and not only knocked it out of the park but they changed the music industry forever as we'll.

  • More on Apple: Raymond James reports many iPhone suppliers have "recently indicated an expectation of earlier seasonality," and takes it as evidence of a pending refresh. A big drop in shipments is expected for the June quarter, followed by Sep. quarter growth. The big question for Apple is whether an iPhone 5S that keeps a 4" display (as has been reported) will lead to a major sales pickup in the face of growing demand for larger displays, and the upcoming launch of Samsung's Galaxy S IV. However, an early 5S release would suggest an accelerated launch for an iPhone 6 rumored to have a bigger display.  [View news story]
I was an executive for a large publicly traded company and I have been on the board of directors for two others. Believe me, people in these key positions at Apple do not spend their time plotting to spin petty story's about their competitors. Their primary aim is two fold: making the greatest products that they can and provide world class service to current and future customers.

This is one of the most thinly researched articles I have ever read on seeking alpha. The numbers you present prove nothing. Just another guy with an opinion.
