  • Gold Mining Stocks: Time to Back Up the Truck [View article]
Like you, I am married to AXU after initial purchases @ $6 and $6.16. I also believe the best is yet to come in GORO as it is just begining to extract ore from the underground mines and the content exceeds projections. I own that at $4, $6 and $10. I probably will sell 1/2 at $35 although I think it has a top much higher unless we get out house in order and the $ goes up. My understanding is that this is the "prove it to investors year" and prices aren't expected to move much higher then the low $30's until later in the year.
AXU has zinc and lead ore being recovered that will come close to covering the mining costs before the silver ore is taken into account.

  • Comparing 22 Buffett and Lynch Type Stocks With Dividend ETFs [View article]
My question also. People need to realize that these articles are just opinions. Everyone has one and the investor has to be able to figure out which one is the genius of the day and how long will that person be hot.
As a retired senior executive of one of the largest world money managers I have found that the only truism I could trust is Price and Volume. Secondly, as many wirehouse analysts have not been around long enough to learn from past corrections they can't be trusted for objective opinions or non flawed analysis.
For the majority of my clients I recommended reading IBD and developing for themselves an understanding and feeling for the markets, using stops, and easing into any market or stock over a period of time that best suited their risk levels.
One size shoe doesn't fit all and that is what these opinion writers and readers seem to forget. Plus, nothing lasts forever.
The market is the toughest, and cruelest master anyone will face and everyone will be bruised at times and has to be willing to look at changes and readjust their opinions.

  • Approaching Market Tops, Takeovers and Technology Stocks [View article]
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I sold some last week and put stops in at 10%. The two of them had grown to about 18% of my stock holdings so I sold off 5% of that.
Any thoughts as to the cost of fuel to extract the ore being the reason (or one of them) that mining stocks have lagged the metal itself recently. I notice margins on miners are down also.

I too have a large position at $6 in AXU and also one in GORO at prices from $4 through $25. Do you have an opinion on GORO?
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • Cisco and Intel - Ugly Charts, Bearish Momentum, Good Value [View article]
I am a retired executive with a global wirehouse and as such have had the advantage of watching most of the news letters, read tip sheets or tout sheets, come and go. I would be careful of investing based on a students study of the market, or the shills at MSNBC for that matter.
I can't figure out what the market will do from one day to the next let alone the next year and I especially have learned not to trust the analysts, no matter if they are buy side or sell side. My main reference tool is IBD and after years of investing successfully they have consistantly given me the closest thing to reliable information I can get for decision making along with my own technical analysis.
I currently own INTC and have been buying in the $19 range and initiated positions at the $17 range several months ago. When the stock reaches $23 plus, the dividend will look even better.
My position is that the telecommunications sector will be among the leading sectors going forward and I have significant positions in 5 of the leading companies, some 15 years ago and some within the last couple of years.

  • Cramer's Mad Money - My Most Unpopular Call in the Last Six Years (4/7/11) [View article]
Like all of the talking heads on CNBC they tout stocks and spin stories for the viewing public which is not investment savvy.
The news is late and the mutual funds and hedge funds have already moved.
I'd like to see a study to find out how much they are all being paid to tout stocks by analysts, funds, and investment managers. In the industry Cramer is not held in high esteem but as a high paid stock tout.

  • Can Qualcomm Break Out? [View article]
I think you might be in for a surprise if you think snapdragon is a passing fad and won't hold on for long. QCOM has a long way to go especially in the area of alliances with other giants in the industry.
Regarding the price points being trapped in a range between $30 to $60, before I retired from a major wirehouse in San Diego we used to trade QCOM in the $20 to $40 range like clockwork. Also, living in the area it was a pleasure to work with numerous senior executives and engineers during the 90's and learn the company from the inside out.
I still hold my shares and buy more when it gets in the $30's. So far the Jacobs have done very well for us old QCOM investors.

  • Realty Income Corp: A Shift in Strategy for a Dividend Stalwart? [View article]
I too appreciate the research on O as it is under followed on the street. Being lucky enough to live in Escondido and having worked for a major wirehouse here I was exposed to David Butterfield and Tom Lewis in the early 90's. My clients (and myself) are happy as can be with the returns the payouts each month, and the increases each quarter.. The preferred shares also have been a hidden gem for investors on top of the common. I would encourage everyone who is interested and can make it to attend the annual meeting in Escondido. The Board of Directors is worth the trip to meet and listen to their approach to the company. Especially when it is presented with a Scottish accent which I always look at as a sign of frugality and conservative business practices.
On the 5% payout I hope you all take into account your original price points and then look at the %. Its much higher and in a couple of my clients accounts almost equal, on an annual basis, to their original cash outlay. In my case its bigger than my SS check thanks to reinvested dividends.

I can agree with some of your arguments. However, I have learned over time that the only true judges of the market are "price and volume". Social network sites are random comments from those who's investments are usually for a couple of shares or under $1000. Markets are moved by funds accumulating or distributing shares or a political event over a short period. Bubbles are created, the "herd" of unsophisticated investors moves in and generally loses their shirts.
Investing is best done by professionals if its your Roth, 401k, or retirement. Information that you see has already been acted on by the markets, especially if its been published as by then its really late.

  • Intel Report Card: A Classic Value Play [View article]
As a retired senior executive of UBS I have been trained to be leery of analysts and to rely on the numbers and the only true truism's, Price and Volume. But all in all its an excellent article. Of course I'm prejudiced having bought INTC at $18 and just last week at $21.50. But, I will sit on the 3.5 % dividend and wait for the next generation chip that will gain market share in the mobile category. The biggest bugaboo seems to me to be the lack of interest from the mutual funds, hedgies, and a decade of being dead money. We need a new set of investors and a new chip.
My second problem is my bible, Investors Business Daily, which can't put INTC in its 90% Relative Strength cagegory because it hasn't earned it. So, I hope I'm early. And its the first investment I've made in years that hasn't been top rated by IBD (outside of specs in GORO and AUX of $7,000 each)

  • Hedge Fund Manager Chris Shumway to Hang It Up: Here Are His Top Holdings [View article]
Frankly I don't understand the attacks on Chris Shumway and his style of investing. Gentleman, he is a hedge fund manager whose clients understood his concentrated positions. That's what hedge fund managers do. And, to invest you need from $100,000 to $1, 000,000 so we are not talking about posters who buy a couple of stocks but professional investors aware of the risks. He is also one of the best in the business based on his background and results.
I am not an investor with him but have concentrated positions in AAPL,GOOG,BIDU,GORO,AX... AND O. To most this is high risk however, these are the stocks I moved into from 1995 to today based on the research I did on them. Living in San Diego I had an advantage with QCOM and O and being a VP with an international wirehouse with a client base of tech company executives I had a further advantage. Plus, I use stop losses to reduce excessive loss.
Anyway, it works for me. I just think Chris is a unique money manager.

  • Apple vs. Google - Which Is the Better Stock? [View article]
I too own both but also own QCOM so am making money no matter who's cell phone is sold. Big mistake was selling BIDU at $105 a while ago when the Asian situation was in question. Oops, but if INTC adds a smart phone chip as expected that will make up the difference. Hoping for $18 but will probably will buy 1/2 at $20 and change.
