Banks: Nationalize, Cleanse and Get It Over With [View article]
Yes, and all Intel has to do is start flying airplanes. Great idea, but the banks are not landlords and it's not as easy being a landlord as you make it sound.

Actually, Texas is the world leader in current wind generation (all onshore at present time) with plans to expand wind production dramatically in the future.
The Government's Subprime 'Bailout' Plan Will Kill the Housing Market [View article]
The intent of this plan is to encourage lenders to do what they would do if they were dealing with a sophisticated corporate client, that is, renegotiate the loan terms. Lenders do this sort of thing all the time. I personally think it makes sense. The objective is to stop the carnage and keep people in their homes, not bail out Californians who thought prices would rise forever.

If I was a shareholder, it would terrify me to think that my management team is just now coming to terms with the erosion of print advertising caused by the Internet. It's a little late in the game to be rolling out a real estate website. The field is already crowded and established brands are fighting for market share. What does SunTimes bring to the mix? The ability to search for homes? Hundreds of other sites already provide that. There has to be something more. I hope there's something more....

Who's Failing Us With Bad Information? [View article]
It's actually not just a corporate governance or accounting problem. It is emblematic of problems in all areas of society. On the personal front, we have a citizenry that is not even slightly interested in assuming the responsibility that comes with the exercise of rights. We have a government that can't respond to disasters or provide the most basic needs of citizens in spite of taking in more money each year, etc. The real question is why would we think that our corporations would be insulated from these problems?

I am a real estate broker. Just this morning I received a call from an appraiser. She wanted a copy of the purchase agreement on a house I recently sold.
I did not coerce her to come in at value. I did not imply that she should come in at value. I did nothing to initiate the process, and yet now she has the contract and knows what the house sold for and, since this isn't my first rodeo, I can tell you where the appraisal is going to come in.
It appears that in my neck of the Outback at least, nothing has changed.

Boards with the stature of Citi's don't fire a CEO with no replacement in line unless their are serious UNREPORTED problems. Until we know the width and breadth of those problems, staking out a long term position is a crapshoot.

So, in effect you're suggesting that he make an $11K bet on Colorado? With Josh Beckett going in game 5, it's unlikely that Colorado could do better than winning 3 and 4, and having to sweep in Boston. I'm not sure I'd make that $11,000 bet.
This column states the obvious, but it is equally obvious that no politician is going to sit by and let the free market work when there are votes to be bought, uh, I mean earned. The whole system is broken and has been for some time. The Federal government is now "responsible" for making people whole after a natural disaster such as Katrina or the California wildfires. It isn't much of a stretch for the average person to believe the government should bail them out of every mistake. That would be comical, except that the government seems to agree with them. Therein lies the "real problem."
Countrywide: The Lender Who Helped People Save Their Homes [View article]
As someone who repays his debts, lives within his means and honors his commitments, no matter how ridiculous they are, this is insulting on so many levels I don't know where to begin.
Many people who have obtained mortgages on unfavorable terms were lied to, but it doesn't take an MBA to look at the worst case scenario before signing on the bottom line. Those that chose to do so didn't want to do so, and now that it has blown up on them want everyone else to bail them out. I lost money on Enron. Can somebody send me a check and make it right?
