  • Rough Times Ahead for Natural Gas [View article]
Helpful article. EIA April 2009 report noted: “Peak working gas storage capacity as of mid-2008 is 3,789 billion cubic feet (Bcf), an increase of 86 Bcf from last year”

Using an offline application, each week I input storage change and extrapolate thru balance of injection season. Three weeks ago we projected hitting above storage cap at end October. Now it’s mid-October. That is too early. The injection rate last 4 weeks were 52, 54, 65, 69. So the trend is worsening.

EIA calls this limit “working gas storage”. So I was surprised to read in your piece “Most of the remaining storage capacity is controlled by LDCs.” It implies the cap is much lower.

Regardless, even using capacity per EIA, the storage limit will still be reached by mid-October, and the current trend is accelerating this fill date.

    Houston, we have a problem.
