True, I'm fatter now than I was in 1914.

  • In accordance with the provisions of Rule 144, Canadian drug store chain The Jean Coutu Group sells its remaining 65,401,162 shares of Rite Aid (RAD -0.3%) at an average price of $2.95 per share, netting proceeds of $192.2M. The company previously sold 40.5 shares on June 26, and following today's sale, is no longer a shareholder of RAD[View news story]
A nice run-up for RAD over the past nine months. Maybe they just wanted out. The Canadian retail sector hasn't been too successful in their expansion into the U.S. for the most part.

Whether or not the timing is right, I don't know. I don't follow RAD.

Could also be in response to Canadian grocer Loblaw's takeover of Shopper's Drug Mart (drug store chain). With analysts calling for rival grocer Metro to takeover Jean Coutu to keep up, JC might be looking to fend off a takeover and is shedding assets and raising cash to do so.

  • The recent drawdown in the S&P 500 (SPY) is a minor one compared to historical norms, says Goldman in a research note today. While reiterating its view of a 1,750 closing level this year for the index, the team expects there could be another 3-5% down in this current move. [View news story]
At 1615, they said market was fully valued. You sell, they buy.
At 1650+, they gave their new target. You buy (back in), they sell.
I suspect at 3-5% down from here, you'll be buying, they'll be selling.
    Etc., etc., etc....

  • Stocks bounce from a sizable early loss, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq each off 0.35% in the noon hour. It's a broad decline with no sector in the green and the only big S&P 500 gainers being P&G and Intuitive Surgical. Has Apple become a Treasury bond? It's up today and seems to outperform every time there's a selloff. [View news story]
Thanks for the explanation. I was starting to spiral into conspiracy mode there.

For the past week, stocks seemed to rise between 11:00am and noon. Didn't matter if the day ended positive or negative. Trying to lure in the working stiff who does his buying during the lunch hour?!

  • SodaStream (SODA) moves down 5.5% in premarket trading after beating analyst expectations and raising its own revenue guidance. Shares are a bargain off the slide, according to some traders. They see a classic case of the company lowballing guidance to set up a future earning beat. [View news story]
Yes, I was thinking the same thing but left it out of my initial reply.

Probably not their preferred method of selling their brew but having to do it because the self brew coffee maker is an invention that seems to be catching on.

Anyways, for now SODA is small when it comes to selling colas so I don't think it's a threat to the big players just yet.

I don't think the big guys selling similar systems would cannibalize their own sales too much, but more likely increase their presence in the marketplace.

I consider it more like those soda fountains that one sees in restaurants. Instead of cans and bottles being sold, it's syrup containers.

Longer term, I see no barriers to entry.

No stopping the big players (KO, PEP, etc.) from coming out with their own systems, especially since they already control the syrup.

I'm satisfied taking my profits at this point.

Yes, it could go higher but I won't be chasing anything.

I am surprised at how quickly my target was reached though. I may have to reconsider whether or not 1615 will be the high for the year. We'll see what happens in the months to come.

  • Disney (DIS) is hopping mad that the Chinese government wants to add a new tax on studio profits in the nation. Under the negotiated terms of a trade agreement between China and the U.S., studios where expecting to receive 25% of box office revenue back (up from 13%-15%) without seeing any additional taxes. The timing isn't great for Disney with Iron Man 3 expected to do very well in China. [View news story]
