  • Major banks have reportedly made proposals to the Fed on how to pay for the restructuring of large financial institutions that collapse, with the idea being to avoid the chaos that followed Lehman's bankruptcy. Among the suggestions, the largest financial-services holding companies would maintain combined debt and equity equal to 14% of their risk-weighted assets, which would be used to support any failed bank unit seized by regulators. [View news story]
    Not enough information here. So they are going to make 14% of all risk assets available to a failing bank, say in an "Internal Monitary Fund". What if more than one gets in trouble? What if they all get in trouble? That would mean 14% would not really be available would it?

  • Evidence is growing an iPhone 5S (AAPL +0.4%) will arrive around mid-year. Mizuho says checks indicate an iPhone refresh in June or July, and that March quarter iPhone shipments will fall to the 35M-40M range (in-line with consensus). Wedge Partners: "We understand Foxconn is currently prepping production lines for ... iPhone 5S production, which we believe is scheduled to begin in the April timeframe." The firm thinks the 5S will be unveiled at the WWDC conference (typically in June), with sales likely starting in July. MacOtakara recently reported Foxconn has begun 5S production. [View news story]

    OK at 3:00 eastern the effect was that it was off 2.76% but part of that is that gold is off .38% while silver is off 1.48%. Don't know if GSS does silver.

  • As other research desks talk of gold hitting $2,400 or even higher, Citi predicts $1,800/oz. likely will be tested this quarter thanks to global central bank stimulus. The firm sees gradual economic improvement in 2013, "suggesting that sustained investor upside moves should be difficult to maintain."     Bullion banks to stage a take down of au, ag here? What do you think? Will you trade it? Sell now figuring to buy back later at a lower price? With China eating up all of the gold in sight the long term looks bright.
