Apple like to do things in steps and I believe that the AT&T initial release is just to give it a test audience before going global with it. GSM phones can be used almost anywhere in the world. So It becomes fairly simple to open it up to global distribution once they wish to. (OSX once implemented made it easier to move to X86, then phones, he was THAT many steps ahead of the game)If it is to be a flop it will be a very small one (Newton anyone), and I would put significantly higher odds (3/1) on them succeeding than failing, why? because the interface is THAT good, and it is this simplification that improves the efficacy of the product.

Oh and also DELL announced that they are going to try to make a cellphone, probably based off their palmtop/organizer lineup. not to mention they pilfered a MOT exec.

Linux based cellphones are not new. MOT and NOK are both working on those as we speak. All you would need is the ability for them to attach larger screens and keyboards and you might have something that could cut into some parts of desktop functionalities.
