  • BAE has warned it will abandon its proposed €35B merger with EADS if it has to change its Special Security Arrangement (SSA) with the U.S. to "look more like that of EADS," which is stricter, the FT reports. However, the U.S. may not allow BAE to keep its SSA if France and Germany maintain their stakes in the new company. The SSA has allowed BAE to become the Pentagon's most trusted foreign supplier. [View news story]

  • Giant iPhone 5 lines have Gene Munster giddy with excitement: the Piper analyst estimates lines at Boston, New York, and Minneapolis Apple Stores were 83% larger than they were for the 4S (ed: is he sure it's not 84%?), and predicts Apple (AAPL +0.8%) will sell 8M iPhone 5 units through Sunday. Topeka's Brian White predicts "only" 6M-6.5M launch weekend sales, though that's well above the 4M posted last year by the 4S. (FQ4 estimates) (pre-orders) (wait times[View news story]

  • Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 were above 2M over the first 24 hours, Apple (AAPL) announces. That's twice what Apple recorded for the iPhone 4S, and also well above the 1.3M-1.5M the ever-bullish Brian White was initially predicting. Shares +0.8%. (PR) (previous[View news story]
So typical. Long AAPL only investors represent the level 0 of investing. You were lucky enough to catch the money train out of pure luck, and you feel obliged to tell us the story of your life. How many posts like these do we see on the internet? "I bought AAPL 10 years ago, and now it represents 98% of my portfolio. I am so smart haha. You guys know nothing about finance".
What do you think will happen when AAPL stops growing? Well, you'll be back where you belong, in the no-profit zone.

  • All-in? Amazon (AMZN) CEO Jeff Bezos confirms that its expanding network of warehouses across the U.S. will help reduce delivery times for online shoppers - potentially to the point that same-day delivery will be an option in some markets. It's a move that analysts say could either make the company the dominant retailer for decades or keep it mired with low profits due to the high costs of investing in the new warehouses. [View news story]
Paulo santos, are you saying that having 1,000 stores is more cost efficient and less capex intensive than having 20 warehouses to cover the same area? Are you for real?

  • Activision (ATVI +3.7%) outperforms following an upgrade to Overweight from Piper, which is encouraged by a fall game lineup that includes refreshes for the Skylanders, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty franchises. The firm also thinks Activision has "out-executed peers" as of late, and argues shares are primed to break out of a trading range that dates back to '09. (Vivendi sale efforts[View news story]
So here is the deal: a random analyst at Piper just gathers public data about the company upcoming games and puts it in a report, and suddenly the stock is up 4%. Investors are so smart.

  • Why The Microsoft Surface Tablets Should Beat The iPad [View article]
Comparing a tablet-sized PC and a $499 Facebook machine, of course the Surface looks better. If it does run smoothly and has decent battery life, I will buy it.

  • Apple (AAPL) is reportedly planning to roll out a smaller, cheaper iPad by the end of the year, with a screen that's 7-8 inches diagonally vs. the current 9.7 inch version. Apparently Apple's at least a little bit worried about the Nexus 7 (GOOG) and Surface (MSFT).  [View news story]

  • Microsoft (MSFT), whose tablet launch this week drew a bit of media attention, may also be developing its own smartphone, "industry sources" tell Nomura's Rick Sherlund. If the rumor is true, Nokia (NOK), which has bet its increasingly threatened future on Windows Phone, can't be thrilled about it. (Windows Phone 8)  [View news story]

  • Spanish banks need €51B-€62B in extra capital to survive a serious economic downturn, independent audits from consultancies Roland Berger and Oliver Wyman show. The government will now use the assessments to determine how much it will ask for out of the €100B that the EU has made available to rescue the sector. The Bank of Spain says the country's three largest banks don't need extra capital.  [View news story]
How is a strategic consultant such as Roland Berger or Oliver Wyman qualified to assess such complex financial considerations? It's not their job.

  • More on Facebook: Though a recent Reuters survey indicated many U.S. users are reducing their Facebook time, comScore estimates U.S. Facebook users spent 379 minutes/month on the site in April, up from 364 in September. Nielsen, meanwhile, believes Facebook accounted for 18% of all U.S. Web usage in April, more than twice as much time as was spent on Google (GOOG) and YouTube combined. One caveat about comScore: it just co-authored a study with Facebook. (previous)  [View news story]
