  • GT Advanced Technologies - Short Interest Drops, But Does It Matter Now? [View article]
what TG has said on CC is that GT can sell sapphire to other parties but he didn't say just what form of sapphire. GT likely can't sell sapphire screens to other cell phone makers and certainly can't from Mesa BUT they do have the salem manufacturing facility that does sell sapphire and since they are still in production is selling some form of sapphire to somebody.

It is believed by some that GT sold sapphire screens to Vertu prior to the apple agreement, certainly somebody did & there likely was only 3 potential suppliers at that time.

Thanks JD for the answer although it was a rhetorical question but I was pleased to hear from you, especially as someone who lives in the area. GTAT is still seeking engineers and such on their website to work in Mesa.

first they had to buy the 1 million sq ft plant & the land surrounding it, $600 MILLION LOAN TO GTAT to equip the plant with furnaces, etc, then they supposedly built a 400,000 sq ft addition, then they had the normal infrastructure work (parking lots, electrical, water, plumbing, ac, etc). Just guessing but rather sure apple's investment is more than $1 billion.

GT hoped to get its first furnace fired up in march and there is no indication that GT hasn't delivered, they expect to get their final installment from apple in late October, they are producing sapphire, they are ramping up to full capacity, and it seems they are going 24/7. According to GTAT's website they are still hiring engineers for Mesa.

Doesn't sound like anyone is walking away from the plan and according to the MIT Technology Review GTAT is planning to revolutionize the cutting of sapphire using hyperion.

maybe if there was a leak it came from whoever supplied the ionized glass; GT had little to gain being in a contractual position while ramping up a massively huge facility that is selling sapphire to apple just not the sapphire application everyone was betting on or against.

apple isn't required to buy from GTAT, they have first refusal. GT can't sell to some folks but they can sell. I'm betting that the sapphire boules produced in Mesa haven't gone on the market but that is just me speculating. And if they haven't gone on the market there is probably a good reason for that

the apple investment was well over $1 billion. $600 million was a loan to GTAT, Apple had to buy the plant, supposedly they added an additional 400,000 sq ft addition and they likely had other expensive physical costs also. If interested go to google to view the building, it is massive (& covered in solar panels except for 1 section with a solar panel assembly outside the plant also)

the answer to your question about cutting sapphire is in a recent article in the MIT technology report. I expect Mesa today is mostly about the furnaces to create sapphire boules but that is likely to begin transitioning within the next year should GTAT's expectations come to fruition.

  • GT Advanced Technologies: Valuing The Solar Materials Business [View article]
GT has a strong sales force in asia, they have been there for the 6 years I've invested in them. Prior to getting into sapphire (for led lighting) they were just a solar company with nearly all their sales in asia and they were very profitable. The solar crunch made them diversify. In other SA articles they have been identified as one of the top 5 suppliers to the solar industry for the past 5 years (& slowly increasing their share).

they recently won the Qatar contract and now that plant is up & running; expect mention of that in the next earnings report as those revenues haven't been incl except for the down payment. There is mention of the plant on the yahoo message board and the fact that GTAT equipment is prominently mentioned by that company (I haven't yet checked out that link)

GT has never disclosed its clients in asia to my knowledge but others have linked them to most of the firms mentioned in the article. Having the best technology in furnaces makes it unlikely that these firms are looking elsewhere and as the industry rebounds GT is very well positioned as will likely be disclosed by this author in a future article.

they did not "drop" their guidance. they said it would be at the lower level of $600-700 million, not at $600-800 million. They also said that their margin would be at the high end of 12-18%, not 2-18%. I think it is important to accurately state these matters.

Last I knew they were still ramping up to full production capacity; no word of layoffs. It is a 1.4 million sq ft manufacturing facility. I wonder what these analysts think is going to happen there? Because apple made no mention of sapphire on 9/9 I guess apple will never use sapphire on any product except camera lens and the home button on its iphones ever! And by the way GTAT won't issue any confirmation of what its 4th qtr and full year earnings are until February 2015 (just like every year) but let's all get on those high building ledges & jump off today; what is the sense in waiting. Or maybe show a bit of patience and see what the company has to say in its CC in early November that will reflect on the 3rd qtr results.

And while GTAT won't likely ship any hyperions this year I do believe they get a healthy downpayment on them (& any other equipment they sell even if it hasn't yet been shipped). Of course the apple announcement might mean to some folks that since no sapphire screens are imminent that must mean GT has lost its edge as the best technology in the various areas it competes in.

why would buffet ever, ever invest in someone else's portfolio. didn't he recently sell some fossil fuel assets? I never buy into other's portfolio but if buffet wants to put a sustainable portfolio together I'm in (if I can get in early), hope he includes his train company.

to the article's author: you wrote an article clearly aimed at what has been written by other analysts And in a minor way you were gloating. On the basis of other analysts being wrong about sapphire on the new iphones you then go on to question GT management even though they had to know what was going to happen YET reiterated their end of year guidance, revenues of $600-700 million and margins on the high end of 12-18 %. What do you know that they don't. If you were to say that they were laying folks off at Mesa that would be compelling but everything indicates that the opposite is true. GT is running a 1.4 million sq ft manufacturing facility that is approaching full capacity. You have to have products to sell to do for long so saying the "dominance" of GLW continues is true for the next 3-6 months but let's have this discussion in March. New & better technology tends to make existing tech extinct and unless you are arguing that gorilla glass is better I am not sure what this article is about

a lot of whining folks & like most of you I lost a lot more than I should have ventured; have to do some selling to cover the margin call but it was a risk I am willing to take and really as a long who will remain long it is waiting for all of GTAT's different segments to come to fruition.

just a reminder on aug 5 TG gave guidance for the year while speaking about 2nd qtr results. In early November he will give 3rd qtr results and likely update full year expectations. In early February he will give 4th qtr and full year results.
On aug 5 he said most of the year's revenue would be realized in the 4th qtr. Until we hear differently from GTAT that hasn't changed. It certainly didn't play out the way I wanted it to today but this story has only begun to play out. Anyone know of layoffs at Mesa or are they still ramping up to full production?

economies of scale would be a solar powered 1.4 million sq ft manufacturing facility employing 900 folks .

investing in the past isn't my market thesis

this is going back more than 15 or likely more months. Salem MA in the doldrums with the lull in the LED market reportedly began hiring an extra shift. 6 months later we have an agreement with apple and apple has sapphire in their Iphones. Obviously conjecture on my part but I think the 2 are linked. Certainly GT & apple developed a relationship and apple believed that GT could deliver for them and I'm guessing that GTAT already had done so with the camera lens & home button. Besides that sapphire had to have come from somebody & GT was already one of the world's largest suppliers.
