Microsoft (MSFT) roundup: 1) ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reports Microsoft is thinking of bringing back the Start button with Windows Blue, and of also allowing PCs to boot in desktop mode. The report follows major criticism of Win. 8's UI changes, and ugly Q1 PC data partly blamed on the OS. 2) In starting coverage at Overweight, Morgan Stanley asserts Microsoft "can still grow revenues with PCs declining 5% a year over the next five years." Also, an MS CIO survey found 20% of respondents using Windows Azure, compared with 13% using Amazon Web Services (AMZN). (earlier: I, II) [View news story]

No mercy has been shown to Microsoft (MSFT -4.3%) today in the wake of IDC's figures (blamed in part on Win. 8) and Goldman's downgrade. Goldman now sees the PC/tablet sales ratio falling to 59/41 in 2014, and thinks Microsoft could respond with price cuts or SG&A spending cuts. Nomura's Rick Sherlund wonders if a breakup or privatization is possible for Microsoft. He notes March was better than Jan. or Feb. for PC sales, but is still downbeat. "It really takes your breath away, just how bad the quarter was." Separately, Argus has downgraded Intel (INTC -2%) to Hold. [View news story]
Agree. I never use the tile interface.. whatever its called now. i go straight into desktop. its just like windows 7 but faster..
as for hardware - theres really no need to upgrade unless youre a power user. the only reason i upgraded last year was because of a cooked motherboard.

Lumia 920T (NOK) batches are still quickly selling out in China ... and that's not a good thing, argues Tero Kuittinen, since it points to ongoing production issues. Also of concern is the apparent delay of the Indian launch of the mid-range Lumia 620 (crucial to Nokia's emerging markets efforts) to early March. Kuittinen suggests declining volumes have hurt the priority given to Nokia by component suppliers, leading to shortages. Bloomberg previously reported only 30K 920T units had been shipped to China Mobile as of Jan. 30. [View news story]
