  • Has Apple Found The Holy Grail Of Electric Vehicles? [View article]
Apple is sitting on an enormous cash pile. If this is feasible, wouldn't Apple be wise to buy, or take a sizable position in, the cheapest available automaker with a worldwide dealer network? Who is that?

  • The Fallacy Of The Fed's Proposed Rate Raise Policy [View article]
You're right. They don't see the point.

I've been saying all year we are stagnant & the Fed shouldn't raise. Yellen wants to, & pretty much said in Providence a while back that she might raise once regardless of the data.
However, she remains largely data driven. I think now its 50-50 she raises once this year .25%, and then waits to see the results.
Very nice article, Mr. White. A good review of world wide deflation policies. Thank you.

  • Recession Watch: Piger And Term Spread Probabilities [View article]
I don't know about a recession, but we certainly seem stagnant. I don't trust the commonly used U3 unemployment rate. The broader U6 rate is better. The labor participation rate is poor. The Atlanta Fed staff prediction of a ,2% GDP increase for calendar 2015 may be on the money.
Yellen I think is 50-50 to raise the Fed Funds rate by.25% this year. That won't help.

  • 4 Charts: Why Fed Is Unlikely To Raise Rates In 2015 [View article]
    Agreed, agreed and agreed.

All the mindless media repetition of the "experts" declaration of a June 15 Fed Funds rate hike seems to be coming to nought. Their credibility is vanishing.

Yellen and most of the FOMC are data driven, and we appear to be broadly stagnant.

  • With mREITS Janet Yellen Is Your Friend [View article]
Really like this article, thanks Prof.

Yellen is data driven as is most of the FOMC and the data aren't there...yet.

Today FOMC member Evans joined Kocherlakota in doubting there would be a FF rate increase at all this year. Why? Weak far.

The Atlanta Fed is predicting a miniscule increase in GDP for all of 2015. Weak far.

  • ASB Hawaii Is About To Erupt [View article]
Thanks for a good comment, User. Isn't it true the PUC will play the decisive role here? Its members are appointed, not elected, if I recall correctly.

To complicate things further, might not HEI sell the bank even if the NextEra deal fails? I don't think many utilities have unrelated assets like that, at least not for this long.

  • ASB Hawaii Is About To Erupt [View article]
Hmm, Chris, love the article, thanks. BUT, if the deal fails doesn't HE fall back into the 20s? Ouch.

I looked at HE several years back and couldn't figure why they didn't sell the bank. HE had a 95% monopoly in Hawaii then, and I doubt its much less now. Management seemed to be shall we say less than visionary. I bought the preferred for the better yield. Looks like NextEra is for Big Solar, and maybe wind?

I'm tempted, NextEra will shake things up and lessen Hawaii's dependence on
    imported oil.

But where does the common go if the deal doesn't close?

  • Fed will need stronger numbers to hike rates [View news story]
" wonders how the Fed hawks will push through a rate hike..."

Indeed. The Fed issues predictions of the future Fed Funds rate. Last December it lowered its prediction of the end of 2015 fed funds rate from 1.375 to 1.125.
In March it lowered the EO2015 rate prediction, again, from 1.125 to .0625.
Thats the Feds oprediction of its own ff rate. What will it change the predicted rate to in June?
The Atlanta Fed is predicting a GDP increase of .1 or .2 per cent for all of 2015.
We're stagnant, and closer to a mild recession than a fed funds rate hike.
